A M I S H A

I walked into the party feeling painfully conscious of my dress, pretty sure I was overdressed but I faked the confidence I clearly didn't have. Chin up, shoulders back, pretending like I totally belong here.

That's when I spotted the birthday girl. A smile formed on my face as I quickly walked over and she pulled me into a hug immediately.

"Thank you so much for coming!" she shrieked, genuinely happy. "You know no one ever shows up for my birthday. I know it's on Christmas and all, but still."

"You had a birthday," I shrugged. "Can't really change that now. But just so you know, I came straight from a wedding. So feel special."

"Wow—great," she chuckled and looped her arm through mine, dragging me toward a group of girls who were now eyeing me like I'd dropped from Mars.

"This is Amisha, my work colleague," she introduced me. "And this is Alisha, Samaira, and Vidhi. My cousins from the U.S."

I gave them a polite smile. "Hi, nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you too," Vidhi replied, and Khushi handed me a glass of juice which I sipped to distract myself from how awkward I felt. My smile stayed fixed, even if it felt like a lie.

While they chatted about getting more beer, I let my eyes casually scan the room, trying not to make it obvious that I was actually looking for someone.

He said he might come. Or at least I thought he would... especially after seeing my story. I tagged Rehyan on my story, with a red heart on purpose onto my picture he had clicked, just to get a reaction. A small part of me hoped it would work.

But no sign of him.

I sighed, took another sip, and tried to remind myself that I didn't care. Lies. All lies. My mind mocked me.

That's when Alia came up to me with her usual urgency. "Hey," I smiled, hugging her quickly.

She leaned in, dragging me to the side like she had news the FBI couldn't handle. "You know Abhimanyu's here..." she whispered.

My heart stopped. "Where?" I asked, eyes immediately scanning the room.

"But what's the point, yaar?" she sighed. "He's in the backyard. Flirting with some girl. Helping her set up the decorations or whatever."

"What?" I nearly shouted. A few people turned to look. I cleared my throat and forced an awkward smile. "M-My friend just arrived," I mumbled and darted outside.
