I woke up to the smell of bacon- a usual smell for the Lay residence. I got out of my chair and walked to the bathroom. There is no need to have morning breath while Chance is here. I quickly brushed my teeth and washed my face before adding a little make-up.
After getting down the stairs and walking into the kitchen, I found Chance and my mom eating eggs and bacon. "Good morning, Mom. Morning, Chance."
"Good morning, Sweetheart," my mom answered as she got off and dumped the rest of her food into the trash, rinsed her plate, and put into the dishwasher. "Want some eggs?" I've been a vegetarian since I was eleven years old so I don't eat bacon.
"Yeah, sure, Mom, thanks." She walked over to the stove and started making my breakfast. "So, Chance, how did you sleep?" I sat to the left of Chance at the kitchen table- it was considered the head of the table when my mom and I lived with my dad.
"I didn't. I stayed up all night." I glanced up at him. For the first time this morning I noticed the bags under his eyes and the dark coffee wrapped in his hands.
"Remind me later to force you to take a nap because you look exhausted." I walked over to the coffee pot and poured creamer into it. I sat back down at the table.
"I'm fine. I do this all the time. For about a week or so I don't sleep very much. I probably sleep about 10 hours a week, maybe less. Then I have a day that I sleep all day then the week restarts."
"Chance," my mom announced, "as a doctor, I'm pretty sure that isn't healthy for a kid your age."
"That's what people keep telling me, but I'm in perfect condition," the bags under his eyes contradicted this.
"Alex, your eggs are done." I walked over to the counter and grabbed the plate.
My mom walked out off the kitchen and into her room. I waited until I heard her door close before speaking. "What are the plans for today?"
"I was thinking we could go to the library and check for old newspaper articles about this Hannah Wilson chick."
Time lapse
"It says here that the parents moved away. They never said anything to the police or reporters." We had been here for the past 20 minutes already and we had two articles left to look at. We haven't learned much of anything that we didn't already know.
"Would you," he asked. "Their daughter was murdered. I wouldn't be able to stay in the same state either." He's right. The story still didn't make since though. "I don't think there's anything else to learn that we didn't already know. Can we go home?"
"I want to look at this last article." This article was the most recent-dating, only, a year back. It was a remembrance article.
"Alright, I'm going to look at some magazines." He walked off and I looked down at the article. I quickly glanced through the article taking in everything that needed to be taken in.
Who's Jason? Is he a friend of hers? An enemy? Someone who she thought she could trust but in the end betrayed her?
"Chance came back with a magazine in his hand. "Guess what, Angelina and Brad adopted another kid." I looked up at him from the article and gave him a, "does it surprise you face?"
"In all the articles before this one no one- besides the police- said anything or was interviewed. In this one some guy named Jason was interviewed and said that she was expected something to happen that night. If she expected it to happen then why did she leave her house?"
"Maybe there was a party that night and she wanted to go. Then when she got there some guy took her and brought her to your house." Possibly, but that doesn't seem like it would happen. There was something else.
"I don't know; maybe. Are you ready to leave?"
Time lapse
"Question number 6," I said, "how many girlfriends have you had in the past?" I was "interviewing," him for Jessica.
"Three. None of them ever got serious though. My turn." He shifted in my chair. "Question 7; how many boyfriends have you had?"
"One, he shattered my heart." I twisted my thumbs, feeling awkward now. "My turn, question 8. Do you like animals?"
"Yes, I love them. I want to be a veterinarian after I finish college. It's my turn; question 9," I looked around my room thinking of a question I supposed. "Would you kiss a dog if you were dared?
"No, question 10; would you?"
"Yes," he smiled when I made a face of disgust. "Question 11, would you kiss me if you were dared?"
"Yes," he smiled, "Question 12, would you kiss me if you were dared?"
"Absolutely, yes I would. Question 13, if you could live in any state for a week which one would you choose?"
"Louisiana. It's so diverse. I want to experience the spirit of New Orleans. Question 14, where do you want to go to college at?"
"North Carolina University at Chapel Hill, It's where I grew up. Question 15, where do you want to go to college?"
"I haven't decided yet. Question 16, do you have a job?"
"No. Question 17, what do you want to do when you get out of college?"
"I don't know. I haven't decided that either yet. Question 18, do you want a job?
"No, I'd rather spend my free time hanging out with a girl and investigate a ghost story.
