Summer Loving

Camilla had just emerged out of one of her daydreams, which became more and more frequent as the summer wore on. She told her parents it was the heat, which was true... Only it wasn't coming from outside.

She sighed. She was supposed to be practicing her flute number, as part of the summer recital, but nowadays she couldn't focus as she used to. Camilla decided to relive her fantasy and then put it out of her mind for good.

In her head, she had just enjoyed a wonderful sunset picnic, filled with all her favourite foods spread out on a checkered blanket. And of course, the main attraction of the evening, the gorgeous blonde boy sitting across from her.

Noah swept their leftovers away with one swipe of his hand and moved closer to her. She could see his eyelashes fluttering, right in line with her own eyes. His breath was warm on her face, and suddenly his face was almost a couple of millimetres from hers. A shiver went down her spine that had nothing to do with the slight evening chill.

Finally he spoke, but it was only a whisper. "Come with me."

She obliged, because she couldn't do anything else. Camilla was basically his slave. She would do anything to please him, and perhaps that wasn't a good way to live, but she knew that he was kind and sweet, and so maybe she could stand to continue just the way she was.

Taking her hand, he led her over to a chair swing that rustled slightly in the leaves of the oak tree it hung from. The giant tree overlooked a cliff, being only a few feet from it, but Camilla didn't shy away as she normally would. Being with Noah made her both strong and weak at the same time.

They picked their way over the towering oak's roots, settling down in the swing comfortably. Camilla nestled into her companion, staring out at the sun slowly dropping behind the stunning expanse of water. The sound of his voice beside her, low as it was, made her start.

"I got you something," he whispered. He rummaged behind him and pulled out a small box, silently handing it to her. She took it, fumbling with it for a moment, because his eyes ensnared her, ensnared her completely, and she wasn't quite sure how she was doing anything. But finally she tore her gaze away from him and clicked open the box.

Inside was a beautiful silver necklace. The pendant was two clouds joined together, inscribed with the words, "Okay? Okay." There were already tears in her eyes, but he said quietly with suppressed glee, "Turn it over." She did.

Engraved on the back in elegant handwriting were the letters C and N, encircled by a heart. At this Camilla let her tears streak down her face. Noah looked at her with concern and asked, "Are you alright?"

She laughed then, because if at any time in her life she had been alright, it did not compare to this. She turned to him, and with a random courage she didn't know she had, Camilla kissed him tenderly.

It was a magical thing, a long, lingering kiss, and it left the taste of oranges and melons sweet on her lips. Noah smiled at her, and they spent the rest of the night staring at the night sky in between short kisses that made her heart shine like the stars above their heads.

Still splayed out on her bed, Camilla's eyes fluttered open. Her smile quickly faltered into a look of concern when she heard her dad climbing the stairs. She lunged for her flute and had just put it up to her lips when he opened the door.

Quickly smiling at him, Camilla began to play a sappy love song that confused her father, but he shook his head and closed the door, leaving Camilla to play the wonderful song of her heart.
