Chapter 4

I stopped in front of my dads study and lifted my hand to knock. It's been a few months and it's been wonderful to be back home again, despite the daily calls from Aro to 'check up on me'.

Before I could knock, I heard my fathers voice,'Come in sweetheart.' I smiled as I entered and saw him sitting behind his desk.

'Am I disturbing you daddy?' I asked.

He smiled at me, 'Never' , he said and held open his arms. I ran to him and deposited myself on his lap, while he held me tight and sighed, 'What's wrong honey?'

I snuggled against his chest and asked, 'I was wondering...about my mother...I know that she died, I just...I want to know.' I sneaked a peak at him and saw him smiling at me.

'I knew you would ask eventually, but I'm afraid I don't know much about her,' he gently lifted me off his lap as he got up and put me in his chair. ' We found her wandering the woods, and I saw that she was about to give birth. She was weak and starved. All she told me was that her name was Rain. I know that she's indian, but she's not from the Quileute reservation. She wouldn't tell me anything else, except...she begged me to save you, Elena. She named you, you know.' I didn't realise I was crying until he pulled me close. 'You look just like her. Same hair, same face, her eyes were brown though.' He wiped away my tears with his thumbs and frowned, ' she did have a picture with her...uhmm...,' he walked towards his safe and opened it up,'...here it is.'

My hand shook as I took it from him and he held my hands, giving me the strength to turn the picture around. I looked at the picture of a young woman and an older man. She looked a bit like me...my mother.

'That's her.' He said pointing to the woman,' I don't know who the man is tho...she uhmm...she died before I could ask her anything else. I'm so sorry honey.'

I looked at him and saw the sadness in his eyes, 'No daddy! You did everything you could and I love you and mom more than anything else in the world! I'm so lucky to have the two of you as my parents.' I hugged him and felt another pair of arms hug me from behind. 'We love you so much,' Esme whispered into my hair.

I snuggled closer, 'I love you too.'

The days passed by in a whirlwind of visits to La Push. I got to know Emily and the rest of Sams pack. I must attract annoyingly overprotective brothers and sisters.

Carlisle felt comfortable enough to leave me with Emily and Sam whenever they went hunting, so I find myself sitting in Em's kitchen, staring at the photo of my mom.

I felt a pair of arms wrap around me. 'You okay honey?' I turned to look at Emily and smiled.

'I'm okay.' I sighed. 'I was just thinking about my mother...my birth mother I mean. do you think it's strange that a part of me misses her? I didn't even know her...and i feel guilty for it, cause Esme is the best mom I could ever ask for.'

Emily took the photo from me. ' It's not strange hun. You will always be a part of her and it's natural to want to know where you come from...the history of your people...'

I looked up when she went quiet and found her looking at the photo with a frown on her face. 'Whats wrong Em?' I asked.

'This man...I've seen him before...on the Makah reservation. I was still a child then of course.' She looked at me then and started smiling. 'Elena...he might still be there!' she said excitedly. 'There is a chance you could find out about your family.'

I was filled with hope right then. 'You think I could find my grandfather?' I asked in a whisper. 'Do you think he's still alive?'

'Who's still alive?' We both turned to see Sam walking in. 'Who are you talking about?' He bent down to place a quick kiss on my forehead and the focused all his attention on Emily. I smiled as he peppered her face with kisses and laughed as she tried and failed to swat him away.

'My grandfather...Emily said she recognised him from the Makah res.' I informed him about what my father told me and he frowned as he listened.

He bent down and looked me in the eye. 'Elena...there's a chance he might not be alive.' my face fell and he noticed it. He kneeled down in front of me 'I just don't want you to get hurt sweetheart.'

I smiled at him, 'I need to know Sam.' he looked at me for a second and then pulled me in for a hug. 'I don't think I could stand not knowing. Either way I get closure right? Will you come with me?' He nodded and kissed the top of my head.

'When do you want to do this?' He asked. I looked at him and took a deep breath.

'I need to tell my parents.' I replied.

'Then lets go. I came in to tell you that they're home. I'll take you.' I greeted Emily with a hug and kiss and took Sams hand as he led me out the door.
