Chapter 5
'Are you sure you want to do this Elena?' I turned to Edward and saw the concern etched on his face. My whole family was watching me intently. Ever since I broke the news about finding my grandfather, they have been supportive, but still concerned.
'I'm sure. I need to do this. Please please understand.' I pleaded with them. Esme wrapped her arms around me and I snuggled closer.
'Of course we understand sweetheart, you have our full support.' She kissed my forehead and smiled.
'Okay so Sam has agreed to take me to the Makah reservation tomorrow, where I'll ask around and try to get some more information.' I smiled triumphantly, feeling very Sherlock Holmsey.
I heard a snicker behind me and turned to see Edward trying very hard to contain his laughter, but failing miserably.
'Sherlock Holmsey?' He whispered to me, laughing even harder when I childishly stuck out my tongue at him.
The rest of the day went by pretty normally, apart from the occasional worried glances from Carlisle. I was pretty worried myself, but tried not to show it. Only Jasper and Edward knew what I really felt.
The next day I found myself sitting at the breakfast table when Sam arrived. He came in and kissed the top of my head before he went to talk to Carlisle.
'You ready?' he asked me. I popped my last piece of pancake in my mouth and nodded.
'Nemme gema schtupp.' I told him while trying to swallow.
'Chew and swallow before you talk Elena.' Esme said as she came into the kitchen. I swallowed and laughed as I went to grab my stuff. I hugged everyone and heard my dad talking to Sam.
'Take care of her Sam. Protect her.' Carlisle told him.
'With my life.'Sam replied. We then got into the car and started our journey.
The Makah reservation wasn't quite what I imagined it to be, but the people were friendly and Sam seemed to be well known among them. We asked around and found out that the man in the photo still lived there. His name is Ben Anella and people warned us that he had become really bitter and unwelcoming over the years. We made our way to his house and when we arrived we saw a small cottage, very badly neglected, but you could see that it must've been really pretty when it was built.
We went up to the door and knocked. We waited for a while and no one answered the door.
'Do you think he went out?' I asked Sam.
'No. He's inside.' he jerked his head at the small window to my right and I turned to see the curtains moving. 'He just doesn't want to answer.' Sam looked at me and I took a deep breath.
'Uhmm...Mr Anella?' I called out, hoping he would hear me. 'My name is Elena. I was hoping I could speak to you about Rain?'
I heard the front door being unlocked and it opened just a fraction before a wheezy voice asked, 'What about her?' I sighed in relief and stepped closer to the door.
'Sir I was hoping you could answer a few questions for me..'
'I don't know where she is...the silly girl...she ran off years ago. Now leave me alone!' he cut in before slamming the door in my face. I stood in shock before I realised something.
'Oh my...Sam...he...he doesn't know...he doesn't know...' I started to hyperventilate and Sam stepped forward before my legs caved in and he held me as I cried. He understood of course, that Ben didn't know that Rain is dead...because of me.
The door opened and Ben stood to the side and watched as I cried. He stiffened when he looked at Sam. 'Bring her inside.' he told Sam gruffly. Sam picked me up and carried me over to the couch and Ben put a glass of water in front me. 'Now what exactly don't I know.' He asked while looking at me. I looked at Sam and he nodded and squeezed my hand.
'Sir...I don't quite know where to start. My father...my adoptive father, he found Rain in the woods, she was really weak and about to give birth. He knew there wasn't time to get her to a hospital and he is really good doctor sir, but the delivery was rough and ...uhmm...I'm so sorry,' I cried then. '...she didn't make it.' I whispered. I looked at Ben and saw him clutching the arm of his chair. Tears swam in his eyes as he looked at me.
'That was 17 years ago...she told my father nothing except her name and the name of her child.' I told him.
'Elena....' he said. 'Was her mothers name...my wife.' He looked at me then, really looked. 'You look just like her you know...although, I don't know where the blue eyes come from.' he smiled then, just a bit.
'I'm so sorry.' I told him 'It's my fault she died...it's all my fault.'
'No!' He cried and a look of pure hatred crossed his face. 'This is all his fault...your father! He seduced her, a young innocent girl...filling her head with all sorts of promises that he had no intention of keeping!' I looked at him surprised and sliver of hope passed through me.
'You know who my father is?' I whispered. 'Please tell me?'
He turned to me fully then, 'Why don't you ask him?' he said pointing to Sam, who had a confused look on his face. 'You both share the same father after all.'
