Chapter 21

As soon as the barrier collapses Kahari and Kai exchange a look of victory. It's almost as if they predicted this would happen. Suspicion twists itself together into a knot that settles in my mind. Kahari lashes out with his two blades. As the swords muster up a golden force field of strength an equally confident smile graces his face. The tattoos along his head and arms glow even brighter. Damn he's hot. Nothing is more attractive than a man who oozes confidence. Kai grabs my arm and thrusts me through the window. I climb hurriedly to the back seat. Through the glass ceiling I can see Kahari skid across the glass then grab onto the window. He swings himself through and thumps down into the copilot seat. Kai follows after him with the swift agility of a cheetah. The windows are slammed shut and a hailstorm of bullets pound against our shield. Kai rips the accelerator forward and we zoom ahead. The battle ships are close on our tail, avid to prevent our escape.

"Sir if you wish to escape I would suggest the black hole known as Iaso," Lena announces. Gizmo barks as if in agreement.

"Is Lena trying to murder us?" I ask taken aback.

"I would never attempt to murder my maker. I am simply suggesting the only option for escape," Lena replies.

"Humans don't know this..." Kai stops mid sentence and leans back in his chair with the wheel pulled taut. The dark matter around us has shifted and become warped. The stars and blackness have blurred as if they'd been pulled back a million times. The white pinpoints of light begin to disappear and all that is visible becomes darkness. Abrupt silence envelops us in a sound of stillness. I look through the back window only to see a pitch black blanket of night. Not a trace of light nor a single star is perceivable. "Black holes are actually wormholes. You can travel through them if you have the right ship. It just so happens that my ship is specially designed to travel through black holes," Kai finishes.

"We're going to be spagettified. I'm going to die a virgin," I sob hysterically. I cover my eyes with the sleeves of my red shirt. "I'm not a crier. But since I'm about to die I think crying is appropriate," I weep.

"Stop crying," Kai urges me. "I just told you we're going to be fine. Don't you trust me?" he asks.

"Of course not!" I yell. "You almost got us killed!"
"I did not almost get us killed. I knew you would be able to summon your powers," Kai remarks.

I wipe the tears away from my eyes. The sniveling stops as I eye Kai in astonishment. "Wait a minute! This was all a set up! You and Kahari jazzed up your little performance to make me think you were going to die! Because you knew it would activate my powers!" I scoff. We continue to move along the black hole, at what seems to be an incredibly slow speed. But then I recall how you can't feel the effect of gravity in a black hole. "You two..." I say with a slow shake of my head. I trail off threateningly. But now the soft voice of sleep whispers in my ear. She reminds me I'm too exhausted to protest. Summoning the lightning strike has drained me. I haven't felt this exhausted since my last marathon. "I need a shower.." I mumble before my head falls back. Too tired to argue, I succumb to the sleep begging me to shut my eyes.
