After arriving to the pizzeria with Sean, I quickly met up with Marcy. We headed to the dance floor as Sean talked with his guy friends. The music was loud, the air smelled like booze, and I was dancing with my best friend. What could be better?
We sat down after a while, and ordered drinks. The pizzeria was high school kids in our area hangout. The place was owned by a young guy who inherited from his dad, and on Fridays and special events he always let the teens order drinks, as long as were cautious. Naturally, 5% were, and the rest were reckless. But hey, as long as I got alcohol, I didn't care.
As we talked and drank, two guys slid into our booth. Though my mind was foggy, I recognized them. Steve Cane and Drew Piper. The two biggest druggies in our school, and Marcy's previous besties.
If you're expecting me to say that they were best friends when they were kids, but then they started drugs, and Marcy dropped them and moved on with her life, you're wrong. Truth is, we all used to be friends, with Marcy closer to them then I was. They started doing drugs, and I drifted even more than I had been, while Marcy got sucked in. This was in sophomore year. I eventually ratted her out to her parents, who got her help. From then on, she resolved to be a straight A student, which she has kept to pretty well.
Marcy was still friendly with them, and she smiled at the pair when they joined us. I nodded my head, to be cordial.
"Long time no see!" Marcy gushed as she hugged Drew, who was next to her. He laughed and said, "Yeah, well we have good news."
"Oh? What is it?" I asked Steve, who was next to me. He smiled his award winning smile that made the girls swoon and said, "We are officially 6 months clean."
"That's amazing!" Marcy laughed, and grabbed Drew into another hug. I smiled at Steve and politely said "Congratulations." He thanked me and shocked me by saying, "Yeah, so maybe we can hang sometime, Elena." I looked at him and said, "Yeah, maybe." He and Drew smiled again and left the table, while Marcy laughed aloud. "Elena!" She shrieked. "He is totally into you!" I laughed with her and said "Well, even if that's true, I happen to have a lovely boyfriend."
Marcy agreed with me, and I excused myself to the washroom.
After entering the stall, a piece of pear taped to the inside of the door caught my eye. It read "Darling Elena, your beauty is poetic. Enjoy this gift." My hands shaking, I pulled down the note, and looked at the back side. Taped there, was a card. The Queen of Spades.
