As I hung out with my friends Jace and Lukas at the party, I realized that something was off. Very off.
Collin started fidgeting with his jacket as he whispered amongst the three of them. Then I smelled something. I smelled something, or rather someone, that wasn't supposed to be here. It was wolf, but not one I clearly recognized. It was odd.
The entire evening flew by, and before I knew it, almost everybody's sweaty bodies were on the dance floor in a drunken haze. A few girls rubbed against me, saying "oopsies" and giggling, trying to be cute but neither of them were the type to bring home to mom. I could sense it.
A smoke-like fog filled the air, masking just about any scent that might've alerted the others like me that something was up. Someone, something else was close by. By that time, everyone was so aroused by the heat of each others bodies, that nothing would have made them stop dancing. A strobe light beamed directly into my eye, burning my eye and giving me a small migraine.
Bodies were rubbing against each other, the friction causing more than just heat. They were pressed hard to one another, just grinding away like a sharpening wheel. There were so many people that showed up that I'm surprised the ground didn't cave. Each one of them were like me. Members of my pack all searching for their mates while they danced through the crowded place, kissing anyone and everyone willing.
At least they were having fun. Everyone jumped up and down to the music, including the DJ. I searched the crowd for my best friend, but I couldn't find him. I started to get worried until I saw him in the corner by the bathroom making out with my sister...Gross.
Unease still lingered in my mind but I was getting caught up in the moment. I just dismissed it as the product of anxiety about how claustrophobic I was feeling and the importance of the gathering. I just had a gut feeling that someone here didn't belong.
It seemed like days before the light show and the music were done. My pack started to break away in groups. Some of them were leaving with their mates, and others left disappointed. The fog settled and I smelled it again. "MINE!" Every hair on my body rose and my body tensed. It's like the autopilot was turning on and I barely had control over my body.
"MINE! Gimme!" My wolf side could sense my mate. Testosterone and pheromones were at an all time high. I jumped out of my seat. I looked all around me and just decided it would be better just to wait to see who stayed behind. Within minutes there were only twenty or so people left. Collin left with Elaine, Jace and Lukas went home, and I was still here.
I took a glance around the yard and my gut took a turn. A muscular guy, about 6'3, only a few inches taller than me, loomed in the shadows. It seemed as if nobody else noticed him there. In their defense, they were quite focused on pressing matters of when they would meet their mate.
I saw two flame-like flickers about where his eyes should've been. Then I heard a very low rumble, almost like a growl, but it was much deeper than any I'd ever heard. He noticed that I was staring and took a few slow steps closer to me. He could tell I was a little on edge, so he stopped in his tracks.
I could tell he wanted to be closer, and somehow I was drawn to him as well. I had to get closer. I needed to know who he was.
I still couldn't see every detail, but when he moved forward I saw a lot more. He had a very defined jawline and light green-blue eyes. His hair was a sandy hazel color. It was wavy and went down to his shoulders in a very charming way. Half of his thick hair was up in a bun. He wore a red plaid-patterned flannel over a black tee, some jeans, and a pair of nice boots. His olive-tanned skin showed where his sleeves were rolled up and his neck stuck out of his shirt. The makings of a short full beard relaxed itself on the lower half of his face. Nicely trimmed and amazing.
