Outside of Fat Mack's Rib Shack, Dean was leaning against the Impala.
I was standing nearby, checking my phone.
Sam walked up, carrying a bag of food and a couple drinks. "Heads up."
Sam handed us each a drink, walking toward the passenger side of the Impala.
"I caught wind of a case on this police scanner," I told him. "Sounds like our kind of thing."
"I wasn't even gone ten minutes," Sam told us.
"Okay," I told him. "That matters why?"
"I don't know, Ness," Sam told me sarcastically. "How about because you haven't said a word since Prentiss Island. What has even you speechless?"
I shook my head. "Because I'm not getting involved in this. This is between you two."
I started to walk away, taking the bag of food from Sam on my way.
Sam grabbed my arm to stop me. "Yes, this does involve you, Ness. You're involved in this as much as Dean is. Why are you trying to run from it?"
"I'm not running from anything, and I'll prove it," I told him. "You want to talk about Benny? Fine. Let's talk."
"Okay," Sam told us. "How about he's a vampire?"
"He's also the reason we're topside and not roasting on spits in Purgatory," Dean told him. "Anything else?"
"Don't pretend I don't get it," Sam told us. "I know you had to do what you had to down there."
"I highly doubt you get anything about Purgatory or what happened to either of us," Dean told him.
Sam ignored him, continuing on. "But you're out now, and Benny's still breathing. Why?"
"He's a friend, Sam," I answered.
"And what about my friend, Amy?" Sam asked. "She was what? 'Cause Dean sure as hell didn't have a problem ganking her."
"Well, I guess people change, don't they?" Dean asked. "We let that werewolf Kate go, didn't we?"
"She was different," Sam told us. "She... You think Benny's different? He tell you he's not drinking live blood or something?" Dean and I didn't answer, exchanging a look. "And you believe him. Wow. Okay. You know, you're right, Dean. People do change."
"Yeah, we got a vampire buddy, and you turn your phone off for a year," Dean told him.
"Don't turn this on me," Sam told him.
"Look, Benny slips up and some other hunter turns his lights out, so be it," I told him.
"But it's not gonna be either one of you, right?" Sam asked.
I looked down, not knowing the answer myself.
"You coming or not?" Dean asked, getting into the car.
I looked at Sam, getting into the car.
~~~~~~~
Dean pulled us up to the house.
We were posing as FBI.
"So, guy's old lady comes home while he's working underneath his ride, puts the pedal to the metal, and takes half his head off," I told them.
"What, that's it?" Sam asked.
"Yeah, in a nutshell," I answered. "She says she blacked out. Doesn't remember a damn thing."
"Well, that sounds like insanity," Sam told us.
