The ground was cool from last night rain, a combination of the warm sun's rays on my face and the cool dew spreading across my back. My ears filled with sounds i had been dying to hear all winter, birds, bees, the stream I often spent my time near and most of all Adam's voice.
"Hey, Evangilene what's up?" his voice carried through the soft wind and brought me to a sitting position.
"Hi Adam, nothing much, daydreaming, how about you?"
"I was helping my Dad load the truck for this weekend." Adam and his Dad are huge fans of the sport hunting, from rabbits to moose they are always on the move. Now with Spring Turkey the talk of the town (meaning mid May), they we're bringing home dinner for us all. We sat in silence for a few moments until Adam finally spoke.
"Evangilene, we're moving." said bluntly and clearly, my 16 year-old mind couldn't comprehend what he was saying for a second. My best friend of 10 years moving.
"Where?" a pale comparison of literary devises.
"Prince Edward Island." Too far to visit, our home of Fenlin Falls, Ontario was a quaint place to grow up. Just close enough to the cities to shop and far enough away to live free. I looked up into Adam's eyes, the ones I had seen through everything, heartbreaks, happy times, grade eight graduation (his then mine), high school, my parent's divorce and now this. Those brown eye's never changed, always deep, always there, always promising me everything in the world, and now promising a goodbye. "You okay?" He whispered, I nodded my head before the tears in my eyes could overflow but it was too late, his strong arms were around me before i could protest.
Adam had always been a big guy, ever since my grade 1 year, he was taller, bigger and stronger than everyone else, an exact replica of his father. His pale skin and dark eyes were trademarks the Robinson family, but the hair was his. His two brothers as well as his mother and father had been copies of each other with straight, blond hair which his mother usually wore in a braid down her back, a sign of dealing with five men in the house, but Adam's was brown. Chocolate curls that framed his freckled face in an angelic way that made all the girls swoon. His three older brothers were always on his case about having a girlfriend. The twins of 19; Dylan and Christian especially, while Brynn (22) mainly kept to himself.
That night I was invited over to the Robinson's for dinner and given the full story over a meal of meatloaf and ceaser salad, compliments of Lizz. Adam's dad had been offered a job as the main contractor for a new cabin company, a real destination spot. This being a dream of Bob Robinson's practically since childhood could not be turned down and was of extreme importance to him.
The rest of the family was to leave on Sunday to check out living space amongst other things, Adam would stay here until the remainder of school was over.
I had high hopes that he would be allowed to stay over at our house but my father said no, living just me and my Dad could be a challenge, but one that i accepted. I settled for a 12:00pm curfew and the make good choices speak I assume everyone my age has been through.
Adam, at 18 years old and a graduating (with honors) student has his own vehicle and tonight our goal was simply to de-stress from the hustle of exams. He picked me up at 8 and we quickly sped away from my dimly lighted home.
When Mom had walked out on my Dad and myself- five at the time- we were forced to move from our cushy suburban neighbourhood in Oshawa and into a smalled place, my grandmother lived here and graciously offered her son and his broken daughter into her home, she died of cancer when i was 6.
Adam and I got to know each other at her funeral, Lizz, his mom is florist, specifically one of the only ones in town who personally overviews all her work. On the particular day that a five year old girl with blond ringlets in her hair and a black ens amble consisting of a dress and shiny mary-janes was attending a very confusing ceremony with a weeping father a little boy was "helping" his mother with decorations. The little girl with her father's adoring nickname of Angel began creating a chain of dandy lions to crown her head when that same little boy of seven, a much more mature age, told her that she was doing it with the wrong flowers and began to weave the pretty daisies surrounding them. Ever since then we've been inseparable, never attending a first day without the other, or a birthday party, or even a dance. Boyfriends and girlfriends have come and gone for both of us but none have stuck around with the constant anwser of "I'm hanging out with Evangeline or Adam." But now that was all over.
We excelled towards our destination, a private golf course complete with a forest surrounding it, a forest with the cleanest pond to swim in. Brynn had found the pond years ago, while working as a caddy at the golf course. It was deep enough in the middle to jump, but shallow enough on the outskirts to wad for hours. We weren't supposed to be there but no one really cared, it was a humid day for May and we were both dying for the freedom. He parked on the side of a dirt road and the two of us wound our way through the thick trees until we found the promising reflection of moonlight hitting our faces. Adam was quick, stripping down into his swimming trunks and splashing into the clear, fresh water at an alarming rate. I took my time slowly folding his clothes and setting them on a branch, then undressing myself; shoes, t-shirt, cutoff jeans, tank top and finally releasing my hair from the french braids that it was held up from my neck in.
My navy blue boy cut baithing suit was a camoflaugh in the dark water and I made sure to climb in just as Adam dunk his head, I swam up behind him, enjoying the cool emersion of the natural cooling agent. As his dark hair crested the ripples i jumped onto his back causing a lashing of his limbs in all direction and a satisfying squeal. A quick game of mercy was always included in me and Adam's get togethers and a suprise attack was my only advantage.
"Uncle" Adam cried and i promptly let go of his arm.
"You big baby, I barley touched you." I teased swimming in a circle around him
"Darren likes your butt," Adam said and quickly swam away, knowing I would swat him in the head for making a comment about my butt, "he told me so in rugby practice today."
"I'm sure Darren has great taste." I responded
"Modest too,"
"I have many hidden characteristics." my smile mirrored his. I swung my hips and smiled over my shoulder trying to make a mysterious look work on my akward body.
"I'm gunna miss you Evangeline." his voice grew sad. I stopped smiling and swam up to him, I looked into his eyes.
"Don't worry two years and I'll move down there with you."
"You'd do that for me?" He questioned like I would have never considered it.
"I would go to the end of the world, fall off, repair my injuries and still come back for you." He smiled and laughed quietly.
"Ditto." His arms embraced me and for a moment everything was a woosh in my ears, a soft perfect woosh of emotions, reality, and perfection.
We quietly swam for an hour or so more, talking about our upcoming science project and rating eachother's handstand abilities.
"Its getting late," Adam eventually remarked "we should get you home."
When we stepped out of the pond a chill grew over my body and the wind whipped my hair in every direction. Adam quickly picked up his shirt and handed my clothes to me and we ran to his truck with no looking back.
The wind hadn't been that bad when we had gotten there.
