The song "Say Something " by A Great Big World, has a much deeper meaning then what it is played off as.
This song has been over played over and over on radios, dances, parties, other social events, and even on regular covers. I had eventually gotten so sick of the song I had to turn it off, or switch the radio station in order to avoid it all together. Then, one night it came on my phone, and of course I just got too lazy to change the song, so I left it on.
This time though, I really listened to the lyrics. Something I realized I obviously never had done before.
I uncovered a story, a story of love, heart break, and hope.
The story begins before the song begins. A boy meets a girl. The basis of almost every love story. They talk and become friends, and grow really close. They know so much about each other. The girl, she shows feelings for him, and she tells him. The boy hesitates, then realizes he has the same feelings. So he reaches back for her. And she pulls away. Too scared to be trapped. He understands that, however he still reaches. But she pulls away.
(I'd say, put on a pair of headphones and play the song as you start the next part, but read this at the pace of the song)
The boy is heart broken. He knows they are perfect for one another, and still wants to try. He wants to be with her. And not for reasons other guys go for her, or have in the past. He knows her. He knows her better than anyone. And he realizes he loves her. But by that point, it's too late.
This is where the song starts. He is talking to the girl, telling her he has given up. He is going to move on from her, even though it will hurt him the most.
He gives her that last chance, asking her to tell him to stay. He feels small, and worthless for not seeing how she was pushing him away sooner. He says that he can be the right one for her, all she has to do is give the word. He explains how he feels at the moment, and tells her how he isn't perfect "still learning to love, just starting to crawl" and how he wants to do his best for her, no matter what the cost. But still she doesn't say anything. This goes into the chorus, again telling her how he feels, and begging her. He tries again, trying to prove to her what he is saying is the truth. She still pushes him away. So he takes a deep breath and makes his final decision. "And I, will swallow my pride. Your the one that I love, but I'm saying goodbye " following this is a final chorus, for one last try. Telling her how he felt one last time, begging her to tell him to stay, to not move on. But she doesn't answer him. And his eyes drop down in sorrow, and nods his head. He mumbles "say something..." And He turns around and walks away as the music fades out.
