Jem

"Daddy!" I yelled as I stepped in the house watching as random men moved our things out of my house. I through my school bag down highly confused about what was going on, since when did my dad wanna move. "Have you seen Daddy? " I asked Maria our maid. "Yes, he is taking a call in the backyard." She said while dusting off the China from the China cabinets and packing them up. "What are you doing?" I said kind of furious still having no idea what was going on. "I'm packing." She smiled. "I can see that." I said not seeing anything to be smiling about. "Didn't your father tell you?" She asked. "Tell me what!?" I said. Before I could get anymore aggravated my daddy walked in. "Hi princess." He said smiling. "Daddy what the hell is going on?" I said watching the men walking down the stairs with my bedroom furniture. He sighed. "Sweetheart calm down." I frowned. "Calm down, who are these people and why are they packing everything up, since when were we moving!?" I said crossing my arms and shifting my weight to my left leg. "My job is transferring me for the summer so we have to be gone by tomorrow night." He said. "What? Schools not even out yet they couldn't have just waited until then?" I said now highly upset. "No, Jem I'm afraid that we have to leave ASAP." He said shrugging his shoulders. I sighed. "Well where are we going." "Well I'm going to Australia." He said putting his hands in his pockets. " And you're going to be staying with your grandmother on your mothers side.". I frowned. "In Louisiana?" He smiled. "Don't worry sweetheart you'll be fine." He said walking away. I stayed in that very same spot letting it all sink in. I didn't remember my mother's side of the family the last time I seen them was probably 8 years ago at my moms funeral. My mother didn't visit her family much when I was younger because they just couldn't except the fact that she had married a white man.
