Jem
" August! Never mind don't hang those pictures, I found some better ones I ordered online and forgot all about." My grandma said making he way towards us with a box of wall decor in her arms.

"Oh good morning sweetie how did you sleep?" Grandma said once she noticed me.

I shrugged. "Fine."

"Oh August you must be confused this is my granddaughter Jem she's from Georgia and she's going to be staying with me for the rest of the year. And Jem this is August he usually helps me around the house since yo lazy ass cousin won't do it" she said laughing a little. Now I know where my mom had gotten her sense of humor from.

"Nice to meet you...Jem." August said

I could tell he thought my name was weird by the way he said it. He annoyed me already and I didn't even know him. Why am I like this. I couldn't stand the way he looked at me, like he was looking right through me into my soul. Who was this man?

"Jem do you want to come to the department store with August and I later on? My grandma asked. He looked right into my eyes waiting for an answer.

"No, thanks." I said getting ready to walk back into my room before my grandma spoke again. "Well alright I'll let you get some rest.

I shut the door to my room and crawled under my cover already homesick. I want to get out of here.

Later on in the day the doorbell rang and I guess no one was home but me because no one was answering the door. I had stayed in my room all day because I just felt it was pointless for me to even get up. I dragged my self out of bed and made my way towards the front door. "Who is it?" I was too afraid to just open up the door especially around here. "It's Taylor!" She said kind of annoyed. I frowned and opened up the door to see a girl with long brown-blonde hair standing at the door with her hand on her hip. "Girl what took you so long I been out here for five minutes." She said walking right past me and into the house. It took a minute before I realized she was my cousin Taylor and little Michael's mother. She sat down on the couch looking exhausted from the heat. "Oh...um sorry I was asleep." She frowned. "Girl it's three PM what you doing still in the bed?" I shrugged and sat down on the couch with her. "Where grandma at?" She said taking a cigarette out of her purse. I frowned because first of all I hate the smell of those things and second why is she even trying to smoke in the house? "Umm she said she was going to the department store with that one guy um...August." I said watching her put the cigarette to her lips and light it. "His fine ass was here!? Damn girl he is so fine, I wish he was my baby's daddy. I laughed nervously. "Anyway girl so how is it over there in Georgia" she said while blowing out smoke. "Um it's fine I-" before I could finish my sentence the front door opened and my grandma and that August guy walked in with tons of bags. What was he her servant or something. "Taylor what the hell I tell you about smoking in my damn house, you done lost yo mind." Grandma yelled putting the bags down. August laughed while taking grocery bags into the kitchen. "Alright grandma chill it ain't that bad." Taylor said putting he cigarette out in the ash tray on the coffee table. "Jem you mind helping August with the groceries outside." I shook my head and stood to my feet. Usually I would be the last person to be outside in the heat unloading groceries but something about my grandma scared me so I was just going to do what she said. I still had my pajamas so I felt kind of awkward walking outside with everyone looking at me. I still didn't get why they would rather be outside in this heat. I grabbed a bag getting ready to turn around when someone said something. "You know if you more bags this would go by a lot faster." I turned around to see August standing behind smiling. I laughed nervously. God was he intimidating. He stood almost 2 feet taller than I was and had the most intriguing smile any man could have. "Oh...uh yeah." I said grabbing more bags. He laughed shaking his head and started walking back towards the house.

I sighed and walked back inside the house to find my grandma still arguing with Taylor. "You need to stop partying out every damn night and spend some time with your son!" Grandma yelled. "I do spend time with him he know I'm his mama!" I hurried in the kitchen not wanting to be in the middle of their argument. I was startled by hearing August's voice again. "Don't worry about them they do this all the time call." Geez this guy was everywhere. I smirked a little and put the groceries down on the table. "What you shy or something you don't talk much." I shook my head and folded my arms. "I'm not shy." He smiled. "Don't worry I used to be the same way." He said while putting the milk in the fridge. I frowned. "Wait you guys didn't get any almond milk?" I said looking down at all of the bags. "Some what milk?" He said frowning. "Almond milk, I don't drink any other milk." He shrugged. "I ain't even know that shit existed." I sighed. "Never Mind." "Aye don't worry I can go get you some if you you really want it." Before I could disagree my grandma walked in.

"Lord I don't know what I'm gone do with that child, August you can gone on home me and Jem got it from here thank you for your help baby." She said handing him some money. "Aight ms Lisa I'll see you later." he said walking out the back door that was in the kitchen. Before he walked out he gave me a slight head nod.

"Um grandma?" I said making sure he was gone. "Yes baby." She said while pulling out pots I guess to cook with. "Does he come here all the time?" She sighed. " yeah pretty often cause I need somebody to help me out cause your lazy ass cousins sure won't do it. Why?" I shook my head. "I was just wondering, how old is he?" My grandma stopped what she was doing and turned towards me. "He just turned 20, why you wanna know." She said folding her arms. I frowned. "I was just wondering." She side eyed me and went back to preparing the food. "Yeah okay we'll see about that."

I shook my head still realizing how much my mother had gotten from her. I also still wonder about that August guy, I just met him and I couldn't get him out of my head.
