FOUR YEARS LATER

“Mamma, I’m already late for my job—please, please, no,” Aelda pleaded, standing in front of her mother, who blocked her path with outstretched hands.
“No, young lady. You’re not leaving unless you eat your breakfast,” her mom said, her tone a sweet yet firm threat. Aelda groaned, dropped her bag onto the chair, and sat back down to eat.
“Look at you,” her mother said, watching her with affectionate eyes, “all grown up and working so diligently. Where is my little baby Aelda, hmm? The one who used to run behind me with her tiny steps?”
Aelda glanced up at her mother with a soft smile, warmth flooding her chest.
“I’m still the same Aelda, Mamma. Just… a little busier,” she replied, holding up two fingers close together to show how little time she had.
“Sure, sure,” her mother teased. “And whatever time you do have, you spend it with your boyfriend or your work. Where’s my Mamma-time, hmm?”
At the mention of her boyfriend, Aelda blushed, her cheeks turning a soft pink.
“It’s not like that—we went on a trip just last month, Mamma,” she whined.
“Exactly. Last month. And where’s the trip for this month, my tesoro?” Her mother rested her chin on her palm, the other hand caressing her daughter’s cheek.
“Don’t overwork yourself, mio amore. I don’t want to see you exhausted,” she sighed gently.
“I know, Mamma.” Aelda smiled, leaning into her touch. “I promise—we’ll go on a trip. Just the two of us. A Mamma-and-baby trip.” She giggled, and her mother pressed a soft kiss to her forehead.
“Alright. Now you can go,” her mother finally relented, noticing the empty plate in front of her.
“Okayyy! Bye—I love you!” Aelda chirped, giggling as she rushed out the door.
She unlocked her car and slid into the driver’s seat, her heart still carrying the warmth of her mother’s love.
Getting this car had been one of her proudest accomplishments. Working as a financial analyst in one of Korea’s largest multinational corporations had given her not only a more-than-decent salary, but also a deep sense of independence. Owning a car, buying her own things, standing on her own two feet—it was the kind of freedom she had always dreamed of.
The company she worked for was a giant in Korea, its name shining bright in the share market, respected for its influence and stability.
As she parked in the underground lot and stepped out, adjusting her blazer, she took a deep breath. Another long day awaited her.
And Aelda was ready.
“Hey, Ferrari! Good morning,” the marketing manager, Seo Yujin, greeted brightly as Aelda stepped into the office.
Aelda smiled at the nickname and returned the greeting. “Hey, Seo. How are you? All good?” She paused in front of her cabin door, waiting for Yujin’s reply.
