Chapter 3

Sierra, it turns out, was even more uncooperative than I had first inferred. She wouldn't listen to a word we said until Ari walked up beside her and hollered, "SIERRA! WE'RE FINDING A WAY TO STOP THE MERGE!" Right in her ear. Sierra sat up and was suddenly interested, and then we pretty much were able to plot. We wrote a list of possibilities:

-Create an army of merge haters, take down the Earth Government

-Go around the neighborhood and have people sign a petition

-Sell stuff so we could buy The Merge's equipment, but not the whole Earth Government responsibilities

-Break laws so the government takes us in, then mess with Merging equipment

We looked at the list and narrowed it down to two options. Creating an army, and breaking laws. The petition one was just lame, and and buying government equipment was just too far-fetched. This wouldn't be happening had Hex not created the Merge machine... And just then, it occurred to me to ask how The Merge even worked! I knew what would happen, but I didn't know how. How did she get the people into the body? She had yet to explain so much, but part of me knew it wasn't going to be explained. Thinking about it, I realized The Merge was entirely sketchy. It could be a hoax to kill children! With those thoughts in my mind, I realized how entirely serious this was. We had no time to fool around over break. Break was only a week long, but The Merge was forever. It was so unfair!

We had planned to meet at my house over break. My mom would be totally cool, and the other kids thought their moms would be okay with it. Now that we'd mapped out plan A and plan B, it should be simple from this point on. Little did I know, I was so wrong.
