"Don't make this messier than it needs to be" Ash's words rang loosely in her head. He had used every tactic to get her to see reasons. He had begged, and even threatened her which ultimately left her with no choice but to ask him to leave her house. He had left without a fight but not before promising that it wasn't over between them.
Emily couldn't call him bluff, he was reeking of determination. She was about to lose the only thing that mattered to her.
She quickly wiped her tears when she heard the soft footsteps behind her. She knew without turning around who it was. She was sure he had been waiting anxiously for the right time to come out.
"Mom?" Aiden called out walking closer to where she sat on the couch. She turned around mustering all the smiles she could despite how much her heart was breaking.
She had always tried to hide her pain away from him; ever since he was baby, Aiden had always been sensitive to his mother's emotions. When she was happy, he was too and when she cried he did the same thing. It was as if he left her pain and joy
It would be cute if it wasn't so heartbreaking to her. She never wanted her innocent son to feel such enormous burden at such tender age.
With fake smile, she patted the space besides her signaling that he should sit there. Aiden walked calmly to her.
"Hey baby" she drew him into a huge hug then kissed the top of his head. "You done already? That was fast" She heard only the sound of TV in the play area which meant the others were still eating.
She wouldn't say she was surprised that he had cleared his plate so fast; he had been a fast eater but wasn't that fast. She was sure he was eager to know what happened and who Ash was.
She was dreading the conversation especially since Ash's visit wasn't pleasant. He had made his demand and like classic Ash attitude, had expected her to do as he had demanded.
Aiden looked around the room as if searching for Ash. The scared look on his face didn't go unnoticed by her either.
She raised his chin forcing his gaze back to her. "He is gone"
Emily saw a flick of disappointment in his eyes but was gone before she read into it. She studied his face to try to get a glimpse of what he could possibly be feeling. Being an orphan herself, Emily could empathize with him on not having his father around. It was not a good feeling. The constant nagging feeling that all if it was her fault, that if she hadn't been born maybe her mother would still be alive and the father would still be around. She only hoped that wasn't what her child was feeling.
Ash's decision to not be around was for his own selfish reasons and not Aiden. She made it her mission to constantly remind him that it wasn't his fault so he wouldn't think it was.
"Was that..."
"Yea" she answered his unfinished question. It didn't take a genius to figure out what his question was. Anyone with eyes could see the resemblance. Aiden was a spit image of his father and as he got older, he looked more and more like him. The image haunted her; every time he smiled, it was like looking into the face of the man that broke her.
His looks didn't falter her love for him. She still loved him unconditionally. Yes he reminded her of the man that torn her to pieces, he was also the reason of her existence.
This wasn't the first time Aiden had questioned her about the absence of his father. She had been honest then telling him he would understand better when he became older. He was just five at the time.
Two years later, the question came up again and all she could tell him was that his father was alive and wasn't in the military either. He had asked if he was serving the country and if that was the reason he had missed his birthday again. She withheld the true reason he wasn't in his life since his seven year old self couldn't fully understand.
