"Hey dad" Ash picked up the call using the hand's free button in his car. His father's voice immediately filled the small space.

{"Asher, how are you?"} Despite his annoyance with his father, he knew he had to play nice. The man held his future in his wrinkled hands.

He replied a robotic answer that he was alright which couldn't be further from the truth. His life was a cluster fuck and he didn't know how to fix it or where to begin.

{"So how is it going with Aiden?"} There it was, he thought bitterly. He knew there was only one reason his father called him. Over the years, their relationship had gotten strained. Although they never shared an envious bond before, there was still a mutual forbearing between them. Now, all he seemed to get from his father was condemnation.

The only time they saw eye to eye was when it came to the matters of the company. They had an outstanding professional relationship but outside of that, there was nothing else. Ash was painfully aware that if he wasn't such a great asset to the company, he would have been tossed out of there in a flash. Despite how discontented his father was with his personal choices, he knew Ash was a great businessman and had earned his position as the interim CEO. Ash only wished he would hurry up and formally retire so he could finally take his rightful place.

"Fine. I'm actually at their driveway waiting to pick him up"

"Oh" he heard the surprise in the word. He was shocked to have found himself waiting in Emily's driveway as well. The last thing he wanted to do on a Friday evening was to be picking up a brat but she had left him no other choice. When he emailed her about bringing the boy over, she had simply replied 'if you want him, come get him yourself'

The stubborn part of him wanted to say fuck it but the desperate part of him won. He had to finish what he started. Besides he knew she was paying him back for the previous weeks. So here he was waiting impatiently for them to come out of the house.

Once his dad was off the phone, his hand hit the car horn. He had been sitting out there for more than ten minutes. His patient had finally worn thin.

Aiden walked out of the house holding a container filled with what he saw to be cookies and Emily following right behind him. She was barefooted wearing a pencil skirt with a shear stocking underneath and a t-shirt that was too big for her. From her outfit, he gathered that she had worked earlier in the day and hadn't had time to change completely. He was coming straight from the office himself so he still had his dress pants and button up shirt.

"Sorry. Mom was packing some cookies for me" Ash ignored Aiden's apology as he opened the trunk for her to put his luggage.

"Should I sit in the front?" Aiden asked as he looked around the cramped space. Less than a minute in his presence and he found himself already agitated. This was the first time he had seen his son since he left two weeks ago and within that time, he had spoken to him a total of twice. surprisingly, Aiden had been the one to call having gotten his number from God-knows-where.

"Unless you want to sit in the trunk which really would not be a bad idea" The bite was unwarranted. He knew that, but knowing that did not stop him from being so hostile.

Aiden mumbled another apology before sliding in the front seat. His eyes filled with interest as he took in the expensive interior. Audi R8 was not only impressive on the outside, the interior was equally or even more daunting. The all black interior radiated power and wealth. It was what attracted Ash to the car.

Emily came around once the luggage was secured in the trunk. Their eyes briefly met as she leaned down on the window. Unlike her child, her eyes didn't light up with interest; instead she focused her gaze on the little one.
