The smoke-stained chamber still trembled under every gust of mountain wind. Duchess Margaret stood at the cracked council table, hands planted firmly against the scorched wood, her green velvet cloak ash-streaked yet immaculate in its command.

Before her, Headmistress Sybbyl, Professor Aric—robes half-burned, face tired but steady—and two officers in cobalt-blue armor bowed low. The sigil of the Cindral Watch—Enigma's mountain guard—gleamed faintly on their breastplates.

The taller officer, Captain Drennar, cleared his throat. "Your Grace... the confirmed dead remain at thirty two. fifty are under healer's care. But—" His jaw tightened. "The missing list grows."

Sybbyl adjusted her soot-blackened shawl, reading from her parchment with shaking fingers.

"Among the unaccounted: Adria Fernandez, Asley Simon, Marcus Veylan, Nieve Winston..." She hesitated, then forced the final name. "And... your son. Sebastian." A silence fell thick as smoke. Margaret's knuckles whitened against the table.

"We stipulated that the shockwave after blast might carried them off to... ." another officer spoke, "—East."

She shut her eyes, briefly internally conflicting to tackle this situation.

"I will not ignite panic. No public hunt, no rumors. I want them tracked—quietly. we don't know what they have been facing in that deadly place. Sybbyl give me a name with the talent."

The Kim home was small but warm, its hearth glowing faintly against the cold creeping in from the mountain winds. But the warmth did nothing to soften the storm raging inside.

Gabriel slammed his palm against the table. "You sit here while she's missing? Nieve could be buried under stone, and you—what—sharpen your boots for patrol?"

Michael, broad-shouldered, older, his uniform still marked with the sigil of the Border Guard, clenched his jaw. "I am equally worried for her as you and for Marcus. I'm not in the internal force, Gabe. My orders keep me at the ridges, not chasing blasts in Witchfare. If I leave without sanction, I risk more than—"

"More than your pride?" Gabriel snapped. "She's our sister. My—" He stopped, words breaking, then forced them again. "She's out there. And I won't let her name be just another on their list."

Their mother shifted uneasily, while their father stood rigid, trying not to take sides. Beside them, Liliya, pressed her hands together tightly, her face pale with worry. The argument swelled until the doorbell chimed—three sharp, deliberate strikes.

Liliya glanced between the brothers before stepping forward. She opened the door found, the Cindral Watch.

"The Cindral Watch," one announced, voice firm but formal. "By order of Duchess Maud Le Feuvre, Michael Kim is summoned to Mountain's peak immediately."

Michael froze. Gabriel's lips curved in a half-smile, fierce with relief. "There. Sanction enough."
