Innocent
How We Choose...
"What are you doing?" Sydney had asked. There was a beer in each of her hands. She stepped over to where I was sitting with my back against the cold brick wall, my knees where up to my chin. She handed me one of the beers. Carefully, she settled herself next to me. "Did you hear me, Utessa?"
I nodded my head a decimal amount.
"Then what's with you?" she continued to pry.
"Your father losing this election was a bad deal for me," I told her. I stretched out my legs then rubbed the palms of my hands along my jeans in an attempt to keep my fingers warm. Sydney eyed me curiously over the top of her beer bottle before taking a sip.
"How so?"
"I told Edmond that if your father lost I would marry him," I explained. I could feel my heart sink into my stomach. I loved Edmond with everything I had but being his wife didn't seem like the best of ideas. I graduate college in less than 5 months. Being a wife should not be my reward for that.
"Okay," Sydney said incredulously, "what's the problem?"
"I'm not ready to give up everything," I looked at her, her watery blue eyes were on me like a hawk spotting its prey. Before I knew it, she leaned over and kissed me hard on the mouth. I took in the taste of her. I never kissed another woman but I imagined it couldn't have been as powerful as the kisses me and Sydney had shared over the last years. I loved her just as much as I loved Edmond but our love was different. Our love was not set in stone. Our love was temporary.
"It's alright," she said, "I knew what we were before anything happened between us. Marry the son of a bitch. Have beautiful babies and I'll come over at times to babysit so ya'll can have a fun night out."
"That would be the day," I told her softly, half sobbing, half laughing into my hands. "My 20 something year old, millionaire best friend slash lesbian lover is at my home watching my kids while I'm out with my husband."
"I'm not a millionaire. That's my father and his stank ass wife that has all that money." Sydney scuffed resentfully at her own statement. She got up while at the same time she pulled me to my feet. Again, she kisses me hard. "You want another beer?"
I nodded.
