The phone call was short and the answers Edmond had hoped for or what he thought he had hoped for were answered in less than a minute. The one thing he dreaded had come to pass. Fear and fury flooded him. The truth was given but he still couldn't see past the lie,the lie --
Had he been such a fool, driven by the ignominy of ambition to gain power, that he not only lost his marriage but his career. He saw no way out of this. Detective Grant was involved and he knew, by reputation alone, that Grant would read this like a book. There were too many loose ends and far too many mistakes to overcome.
He must act. He must begin to play the hand he's been dealt. Start to tilt the board in his favor, yet how and at what cost? How much more does he have to sacrifice to break even? He ran a hand over his head, thinking. A modicum of calm cooled his blood: a double cross would be the last thing they would expect because, "I was into deep to think such a thing." He murmured unwittingly. If I can't save myself, Edmond continued to think, I can, by some miracle, save Utessa.
He watched through the two-way mirror as Pearl questioned his wife. He knew what was coming next. He knew what he had set in motion. Utessa must die. In their eyes she knew too much. She could destroy so much, take everything from them. She was the last piece of the puzzle. Ivory began to read Utessa her rights; he cuffed her and pulled her away from the room. They walked her past Edmond and they stared at each other for what seemed like hours, days perhaps. What have I done to this woman, he thought wildly.
"You look worried," Pearl said the moment Utessa was taken completely away. Edmond didn't respond. He stepped into the interrogation room. A small piece of paper was on the floor, next to where Utessa had sat. He didn't know why or for whatever reason it had caught his eye. He kneeled down and picked up what looked to be a folded note. On its face were four written numbers he had heard once before: 2432. Immediately, Edmond began to panic. 2432.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Pearl asked, grabbing a tuff of Edmonds shirt. He handed her the small sheet of paper. She looked down but nothing seemed to register, "SO?"
"Are you that fuckin dumb?" he barked in a loud whisper. "The numbers? Izarah? Chris 2432? Does any of this ring a fuckin bell to you?"
He saw comprehension in the widening of her dark eyes
"She knows."
"Yea," Edmond continued, "she knows."
