The morning after the hospital visit, Althea moved through Forks High with a careful awareness. The air felt heavier than usual; whispers followed Bella Swan wherever she went, and eyes often flicked toward Edward. He moved through the halls with his usual calm, almost unnerving grace, though the tension around him was palpable.
Althea kept her distance, observing from the corners of classrooms and hallways. Bella had survived a near-fatal accident yesterday, yet the girl seemed both shaken and emboldened, moving through the world as if she already belonged. That arrogance pricked at something in Althea, though she quickly masked it behind an impassive expression.
In biology class, Edward's gaze followed Bella relentlessly. She fidgeted in her seat, dropping pencils and glancing nervously at him, oblivious to how unnatural his stillness was. Althea stayed quiet at the back, noting the intensity in Edward's golden eyes. The restraint he showed—how carefully he controlled himself—was familiar to her, but it only made the situation more frustrating to witness.
Alice passed by at one point, giving Althea a small, conspiratorial smile. "Don't let him distract you," she whispered. "He's... always like this."
Althea nodded faintly, her jaw tightening. "I'm trying."
After school, she returned home to the Cullen house. Dinner was a quiet affair, though Emmett and Rosalie's low teasing filled the room. Carlisle moved calmly between them, his presence steady and comforting, while Esme offered warm smiles and soft words to ease the tension.
Jasper joined Althea on the porch afterward, the drizzle of rain mixing with the fresh scent of the forest. He leaned casually against the railing, golden eyes watching her with that same steady warmth.
"You handled school okay today," he said, his tone soft but teasing. "You're more observant than anyone realizes."
Althea let out a small laugh. "Barely. It's exhausting just keeping track of him."
He smirked faintly. "Edward? You mean the golden-eyed storm cloud?"
"Yes," she said, a subtle edge in her voice. "He's impossible sometimes."
Jasper's smile softened. "But you notice the things others don't. That's what makes you... well, you."
Their eyes met for a moment, unspoken understanding passing between them. His hand brushed hers lightly as he stepped closer—not enough to be obvious, but enough to make her chest warm. "We'll survive it together," he murmured.
Althea's lips twitched in a small, reluctant smile. "I hope so."
The next day at school, Bella's awkward fascination with Edward grew harder to ignore. In the cafeteria, she lingered near him, fumbling with her lunch tray and stealing glances when she thought no one was watching. Edward, predictably, remained impassive, yet Althea could feel the intensity radiating from him as he kept her at a careful distance.
Watching the two interact sparked a strange mix of irritation and curiosity in Althea. She felt a flicker of something she couldn't quite name whenever Bella smiled, every word the girl directed at Edward seeming to shift the energy of the room.
Later, when she returned home, Carlisle found her in the living room, quietly observing the rain outside. He approached and placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. "It's a difficult balance, isn't it?" he asked softly.
Althea glanced at him, her expression guarded. "Yes. Human lives... human emotions... they're so fragile. And yet they draw him in."
Carlisle nodded, understanding. "That is always the challenge. But you, Althea, have a perspective they cannot. Don't forget the strength you bring to this family."
Jasper appeared behind her silently, settling into the armchair nearby. He offered her a small, easy smile. "And if you ever need someone to talk to—someone who gets it—I'm here."
Althea felt warmth at his words, a quiet reassurance that eased the tension in her chest. For the first time that day, she allowed herself a small laugh. "I'll remember that," she said softly.
As the rain pattered against the windows, Althea realized the uneasy calm wouldn't last. Bella's presence, Edward's intensity, and the fragile balance of their lives all lingered like shadows—waiting for the smallest spark to tip everything into chaos.
A/N: Okay so I was looking through all my stories and saw this draft so I just decided to publish it. I don't even know what the story was about but I thought it would be good to het this out of my drafts, it's not proofread or anything.
