Lesson 2: The penalty for sin

Sin must be paid for.

"Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgement" (Hebrews 9:27).

The penalty for sin.

The Bible says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of life is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23). This death means spiritual as well as physical death. That is spending eternity in Hell separated from God, "But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all the liars their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death" (Revelation 21:8).

Sin separates man from God.

"But your inequities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear" (Isaiah 59:2). "No one calls on your name or strives to lay hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us and made us waste away because of our sins" (Isaiah 64:7).
