Nobody wants to die and spend his/her future in hell. Some people try to be good to pay for their sin in order to escape punishment. They go to church, they fast, they make confession, they give alms to charity but none of these can take away sin.

You cannot pay for your sin.

The good works that man does cannot take away and pay for his sin. "All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags." (Isaiah 64:6).

Salvation is a gift from God.

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8,9) "He saved us, not because of righteous things we have done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit." (Titus 3:5) Our good works are the fruits of our faith in Christ.

Christ alone can save is from sin. "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8).

The Lamb of God became the payment for sin. He gave His life so that we could live.
