In the "jail," the atmosphere was muted, the kind of late-night stillness that made every sound feel sharper. Ada was still curled up with her book, eyes skimming the page under the dim light. Jade lay on her camping bed, half-drifting, her body heavy with exhaustion, though her mind refused to fully switch off. Across from them, America was already back, in her pyjamas, earplugs tucked in, her body language closed off as if the day had finally wrung her dry.
Tays and Jack stepped inside, their energy softer now than it had been earlier. Tays glanced around before his eyes landed on America. "How are you, love?" he asked warmly, his Manchester accent carrying a gentleness with it. America didn't move. Her earplugs blocked his voice completely. Tays frowned, leaning forward a little. "How are ya?" he repeated, louder this time. America blinked, pulling one earplug out. "Huh?" she mumbled, her voice thick with tiredness.
"How are ya?" Tays asked again, patient but insistent. With a sigh, America tugged out the other earplug. "One sec... let me put my mic on to talk," she muttered, her tone tinged with frustration as she reached for the box at the end of her bed. She grabbed the mic and lifted it closer to her mouth before speaking into it, her words blunt, almost resigned. "I'm not too bad... erm... I could be better."
Tays stepped closer, crouching slightly to meet her at eye level. "Thank you, bro," America added quickly, her voice softening as she wrapped an arm around him. He leaned in without hesitation, folding her into a comforting hug, his arms warm and steady around her. "I just feel mashed up," she admitted into his shoulder, her voice cracking faintly with the weight of it.
The words weren't dramatic, just honest... the kind of honesty that only slips out when you're too tired to guard yourself anymore. After a long moment, she leaned back slightly, adjusting the mic against her chest. "Sugar, I've taken it off because I'm going to my bed," she explained, speaking clearly for the producers behind the scenes. "When you come to take it, I don't want to get disturbed, innit, so please understand." Her voice carried that mix of defiance and vulnerability... asking for space but still needing it to be heard.
Tays nodded, unwrapping his arms gently from around her, though his eyes stayed soft with concern. "Do you need anything?" he asked quietly, almost hopeful she'd let him help. America shook her head, her hair brushing against her cheeks. "Nah... I got everything," she said firmly, though the tired slump of her shoulders gave away more than her words.
"Can all the housemates who belong in the balling bedroom, find themselves in the balling area. Could all housemates who would be spending their evening in the basic area, get there, now. The division is imminent."
As the night settled in and the two teams began to split off, the air outside the basic area buzzed with noise. Voices overlapped... different conversations all happening at once... laughter, questions, bits of chatter colliding in a messy chorus. For Jade, it was too much. The volume, the chaos, the sheer number of sounds pressing in at once... it all made her head pound.
She raised her hands, covering her ears, trying to block it out. Her body tensed, shoulders drawn tight, as though she could shrink away from the noise if she just made herself small enough. Finally, the door shut with a solid click, sealing the blue team inside for the night. The sudden quiet was a relief, like stepping out of a storm into still air. Across the house, the red team disappeared toward the bedroom, leaving Jade and the others to settle down in the makeshift "jail."
Ada, America, Jade, and Jack were already in their camping beds, lying in varying states of exhaustion. Only Shelen and Michael lingered, moving slowly, not yet ready to lay down. Michael's eyes drifted across the room until they landed on Jade. He caught the subtle way her hands still hovered near her ears, her fingers pressing lightly against her head as though she couldn't quite let go of the noise still echoing inside her. He let out a soft sigh, quiet enough not to draw attention.
