"Because I loved you once." He replies relatively quickly. "But I've had time to move on and accept that you never felt that way for me."

"Jatix, I... I did." I say before lurching forward from a sudden slamming on the brakes.

Jatix looks into my eyes, an unreadable expression on his face.

"Why would you say that to me?" He asks, trying to sound calm.

"Because it's true, I can't have you thinking I was never attached to you in that way-"

"Well, maybe it was better that way, huh? Easier..." He looks away momentarily. "I don't believe you." He adds flatly.

"You don't have to." I say. "If it's easier for you to think I didn't-"

"You didn't, because how could you hurt me like that if you were actually attached to me in that way?"

"I don't know- do you think I was just pretending the whole time? Did it not feel real?"

"It felt too real. But perhaps that was only for me."

"No, Jatix, what I felt was real, too-"

"No, Hazel, I don't want to hear it." He studies my face, exasperated. "What are you trying to do? Is that supposed to make me feel better, that you loved me but you loved Rassler more? That I was your second choice? That's cruel, Hazel, I-"

Jatix is cut off by a sudden knock on the window, and only then do I realize flashing red and blue lights behind us.

Jatix rolls down his window, and is met by a cop looking inside the vehicle.

"Any reason why you're parked in the middle of the road?" The cop asks.

Jatix stares at him momentarily before answering,

"Intense conversation."

The cop glances to me, then back to Jatix.

"Well, perhaps the next time you plan to have one of these 'intense conversations' you could pull over to the side of the road." He says.

"Well that's the thing, it wasn't exactly planned." I tell him.

The police officer sighs.

"Whatever, just don't stop in the middle of the road, okay? You're a danger to yourself and other traffic."

Jatix nods.

"Sorry officer. We'll be on our way."

"I ought to give you a ticket..." He grumbles. "Whatever, just get outta here and don't do it again."

Jatix dips his head, and the cop turns to walk back to his vehicle.

Jatix resumes driving immediately after, and when I see a faint smile creeping onto his face, I can't help but laugh. Once I do, he doesn't hold himself back and joins me.

He stops a little later to look at me.

"Shut up, I'm still mad at you." He lets me know.

I can't reply, partially because I don't have words but more because the whole cop situation is stupidly funny to me.

Jatix pulls into the parking lot of a nearby cafe, stopping the car somewhere legal this time.

"If he gave us a ticket I'd make you pay, that was your fault." He adds, still smiling.

"Me? I didn't slam on the breaks!" I say, still chuckling.

"Maybe not, but I wouldn't have if you didn't say that."
