Prologue
In a quaint little town a row of buildings was settled on a street that was busy, but not too busy. There were many different shops, apartments, alleyways, and stores. Nestled in between an apartment building and an office building, is a quaint little place. It's the kind of place you want to go when you need a few minutes, where you go to relax and enjoy some good company. A simple sign above the door read: ‘The Café.’ Step inside and the walls are a wonderful chocolate brown, warm and inviting. The smell of coffee permeates the air, making the scene relaxed and fresh.
The Cafe was divided into two sections. In one section, the customers could sit down and peruse a small menu with their items on it. An employee would take their order and serve them. When finished, the customer would go to the register and pay for order and the server would be clearing the table for the next customer who wished to sit down. Many of the businesses would have small meetings in The Cafe, or adorable couples would come for a date. There was a wide variety of customers in the building at any one time.
For customers who didn't want to be served in the sit down area, there was a rather comfortable area that had large comfortable chairs and tables. On one wall stood a bookshelf filled with a wide variety of books. There were no rules to the bookshelf. People were welcome to take any books, and to bring books in that they themselves didn't want to read anymore. Customers loved this and the bookshelf was never empty. Those customers who just wanted a drink would purchase their beverage, grab a book, and sit down in the lovely leather chairs. When finished, they would bring their mug to the counter, or they would walk out if they had gotten a paper cup.
The employees smiled as they tended the counter or waited on tables. It added to the amazing atmosphere. Almost all the customers were known by name, and they were delighted to know that their “usual” order would be made exactly how they liked it, regardless of who was serving them. It was very rare when a customer wouldn't tip the fabulous services at The Cafe. There were never many complaints, but when there were, they were dealt with politely and efficiently by both the staff and their clients.
With its homey atmosphere, The Cafe appealed to more than just the customers. It was a welcome place that the employees were excited to come to. There was rarely a time when someone would turn down a shift at The Cafe. The employees even enjoyed the times when the cafe was so busy. They knew that is was just their luck that they had a boss like Markus, who encouraged them all to enjoy their time, and to make their own coffees during their shift as well.
The owner, Markus Weston, kept his guests happy. He was a handsome, but quiet man. The workers were always content because he treated them fairly with a voice that was soft- spoken and kind, yet firm and direct in a moment of need. Markus could normally be found drifting between the serviced tables, as well as talking to those customers in the relaxed seating area. If he was not there, he was behind the counter serving customers with a smile, or in his office doing the paperwork required to keep The Cafe open and running.
Another near-constant figure in the cafe was Sophia Banks. She was the head waitress, and had been working there since a few weeks after the Cafe had opened. She had curly, light brown hair and didn't like to wear make-up. The innocent features of her face made her seem bouncy and childlike, while the purple that she dyed her bangs and the hair the framed her face distracted people from noticing the bit of extra weight she carried and dimmed the innocence she held, showing a slight bit of a rebellious streak.
Sasha did most of the hiring and firing for Markus, as he was normally busy with book keeping, and it made her more outgoing than quiet and reserved like her personality made her. The kind hearted manner she held made her one of the favourites of the customers, but also of the staff who knew they could go to her when they needed someone to talk to. It helped that she would hold no judgements and made conversation between them easier.
While there are many more staff members that work at The Cafe, you will slowly get to know them. To begin with, this is the story of Kyle Marks, a high school student working evenings and weekends to save up for college. In this story, we will follow him through the trials and tribulations of his life – his love life to be exact. So now, I welcome you to The Cafe. Please, enjoy your stay.
