"I'm really sorry, Em. But there isn't anything I can do anymore. I've tried and tried, and this relationship has been awesome, but it won't work out. I'm sorry I had to put you through this. I really am. Call me sometimes, okay?"
I looked up at Jake, tears threatening to spill out. "Jake! Come back!"
He gave me one last sad look, turned around, and walked out of my life. One tear found its way traveling down my cheek. I turned around and walked back to my apartment. I opened the door to my flat and looked around. A leather sofa was against the wall with a small flat screen TV on the wall opposite of it. A small hallway to the side led to three rooms- two bedrooms and a bathroom. On the other side of the room, a small kitchen with an adjoining dining room. I went straight to my room and looked at myself in the full sized mirror. Dressed in blue skinny jeans, a gray v-neck, a high ponytail of blonde hair, and stormy blue eyes that stared right back at me. I changed into an old Chicago Blackhawks t-shirt and shorts. As I walked to the kitchen, I checked Sophie's room. She was gone, probably on a date with Lance. Sophie Carden was my roommate, as well as my best friend. When I got to the kitchen, I opened the refrigerator. I scanned the shelves. Nothing I felt like eating. I opened the cupboard. I reached for a Nutella jar. Perfect. I got a spoon, a light blanket, and and my MacBook laptop as I snuggled into the coach. As I opened my Mac, I realized what had just happened. I had just broken up with a guy that I had spent almost four years dating. I closed my eyes as memories from this supposed to be perfect night. Tomorrow, October 1st, would have been our four year anniversary. I remember going over to his apartment, excited. He had opened the door and we had spent the first hour or two talking until he had taken me to bedroom and placed me on his bed. Realizing what he was going to do, I had gotten up and left. I had ran most of the way home, my mind still trying to grasp what had happened. He had caught up to me and tried to apologize. I had felt numb, refusing his apologies. And then he left my life. I opened my eyes as the door opened and a smiling Sophie came in.
"Hey! How was the date with Jake?" She asked, as she put her purse down. I shrugged as I opened my Mac. I was ready to watch some hockey to calm me down.
"We broke up." Sophie's mouth dropped.
"What happened?! Everything was going so well between you two! Tell me what happened." She said as she sat next to me, pulling the blanket to cover us both. I reluctantly put my Mac away and grabbed the Nutella jar. I took spoonful and put it in my mouth. I slowly began to tell her what had happened, watching her expression go sad.
"I'm really sorry, Emily. He should have asked you if it was okay instead of assuming you would be okay with it." I sighed.
"I'm fine with it, I just feel really bad now for throwing away four years of my life to some dick who doesn't give a damn about what I think anymore. But I'm okay. I was just going to watch some hockey when you came. How was your date with Lance?"
"That's good! Great, it was fun, we went ice skating. But I wanna watch hockey with my favorite person alive!" I tried to laugh. I opened Game 6 of the 2013 Stanley Cup Finals between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins. I kept eating spoonful after spoonful of Nutella, knowing I would probably get sick. I shrugged the thought off. I really needed a night off. I felt my eyes close, letting sleep wash over me, the comforting sounds of some intense hockey in the background.
I woke up as rays of light seeped into the living room. I looked around, drowsy. I checked my phone, it was 8:08 AM, October 1st, 2014. I must have fallen asleep during the game. Oh well. I pulled the blanket off when Sophie came into the room, carrying two cups of coffee.
"I have scrambled eggs in the kitchen if you want any." I jumped up and leaped to the kitchen. No eggs on the table. No eggs on the counter. I check the fridge. No scrambled eggs in there. I glared at Sophie as she walked in, cool as a cucumber.
"Sophie Patricia Carden! You lied!" I said, pretending to pout. She flashed me her something-awesome-is-happening smile and pointed to two envelopes on the table. I walked to the table and picked up the envelopes. Both were addressed to me. I opened them. Inside was a letter. I picked up the piece of paper.
"Dear Miss Emily N. Williams,

I read the whole letter out loud to Sophie. Her eyes widened as she pulled me into a bear hug.
"You were right! I'm so glad you entered!" She pulled away from the embrace, her eyes brimming with tears of joy. I laughed. The other envelope had the two tickets, and the password to our online tickets for the rest of the season. I gave her one last hug before returning to my coffee in the living room.
