Chapter 8

I Miss You

Rei and I spent lunch together, but I didn't meet up with him at his locker after school. Even though I knew that Talen's order was ridiculous I still respected him. I was raised that way, which means I already feel absolutely guilty for talking to Rei during my breaks. I can't help it, I didn't want Talen to be any angrier than he already is. I also couldn't take the chance to be seen with him if Talen gets out of his car and goes around the school looking for me. I know he couldn't do that, but I still felt like he would do that type of thing.

Instead of going to where all the walkers exit the school I crossed the court yard and exit the school from the front gate which is where the car riders get picked up.

BEEP BEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP

I knew exactly who it was. A black Crown Victoria parked in the staff only parking. It was Talen with Jake in the back seat. I could hear them arguing from where I was, which was pretty far away. Walking over I could easily eavesdrop on their conversation. Not that it was hard to.

"Why not, I know for a fact everyone will accept it without a problem!" Jake was telling Talen his tone made it sound like he was going to punch out the car window. Talen turned his body around to face him after waving me over.

"I told you to drop it already!" Talen hisses back making Jake growl and punch the back of Talen's seat. But he didn't reply since I was already ten feet away. I raised a hand as greeting.

"Hey guys." I didn't want to get in the middle of their argument.

Talen went straight for the kill before I even opened my door to get in. "Did you talk to Rei, tell me the truth." He didn't sound as angry as yesterday, but it did still squeeze the truth out of me.

Before answering I opened the door, sat down and put on my seat belt. "I did."

"What did I say?" He snapped at me slamming his palm on the steering wheel.

"You said-."

"Shut up." He cut me off and ran a hand through his hair. "Shut the fuck up." He started up the car and reversed out of the parking space at a very unsafe speed.

"Are you trying to get into an accident Talen!" Jake reached over the front and grabbed his (Talen's) shoulder. "You need to calm down."

Talen started muttering to himself picking up speed as he entered the road leading out of the school property. I couldn't help but watch as my brother mouth off to himself and then cursing me out. Why didn't I just listen to him?

At home Jake decided to stay over and cook for us since Talen refused to even look at me. He didn't feel too great about leaving us alone together. Probably scared Talen might rip my face off for not listening to what he told me earlier. All I had to do was ignore Rei's existence, but I couldn't do that. He's my best friend, it's not something you can just do.

"You okay?" Jake asked leaning against the kitchen table after setting the meatloaf he made into the oven. I looked at what he was wearing and stifled a laugh. He was wearing the apron Kammie, a girl from my cooking class, gave to me. It was light blue with ruffles on the edges. It's obviously made for a woman, but somehow Jake rocked it.
