Today was the day, selection day. The day where we all go to get processed, tested, and screened to see if we are eligible to be saved. Woo-hoo, not.
Selection day happens after every three phases of the Valla, which is the phases of the stars in which we mark time. The first phase is Adaquande, meaning 'light', during of which the Valla are at their brightest. The second is Quowalaye, which means 'shadow', this is when the Valla start to dim and fade. The last phase is Equwee, or 'darkness', only one Valla can be seen in the sky now.
Now the Valla are shining deeply in the sky, the beginning of the next Adaquande on it's way. I look at my family next to me, all bearing our letter markings, waiting to see who stays and who goes on Celaadrial, the great ship. My father, Pallabajorn, is unreadable, his face shows nothing and even his feet, his nervous tick, are still. Aryia on the other hand is clinging to his thigh, her eyes rittled with fear. "Elerial," my brother whispers to me, "look." And I do, I look up to the stage to see none other than the King standing up there taking in the crowd.
He was handsome, but even still something about him seemed odd and wrong. His eyes exuded death, his mouth was crooked and devilish. He held life and death in his hands. He was our Savior.
