Evelyn woke up the next morning to warm sunshine flitting across her face. Groaning against the light, she sat up slowly and rubbed her eyes, the night before feeling like a blur.
The room was unfamiliar.
"You're awake." An impassive voice she had come to know far too well sounded from beside her.
Evelyn smiled sleepily at the girl, watching her unclasp her hands from across her chest.
"Do you even sleep?" she asked, shuffling up slightly so she could lay her head on Wednesday's shoulder. The girl's hands hesitantly rose to Evelyn's head, gently running her hands through the brown locks silently.
"I do sleep. Makes me feel dead," Wednesday said, her voice taking an undertone of something gentler. Evelyn hummed quietly, eyes drifting shut as Wednesday continued. "Sleep longer. It's a day off."
Evelyn lifted her head to press a quick kiss to Wednesday's cold jaw before resuming her position, silently laughing as she felt the girl stiffen for a moment.
"Well," Wednesday said, pushing Evelyn off of her as she sat straight up in the bed. Evelyn followed, rising alongside the girl to let her legs hang off the side of Wednesday's bed. "I still mean what I said about my investigation."
"And I still mean what I said about not caring," Evelyn retorted, earnestly staring at the side of Wednesday's face.
The girl rolled her eyes in response.
Evelyn sighed heavily, sprawling out on the bed.
"I forgot to take my makeup off so I'll be breaking out soon," she lamented, her lips forming a pout. The pimples felt like they were forming as she spoke.
Wednesday cast her a sidelong glance, her voice softening slightly as she stood up, "I wouldn't worry about that, Evelyn."
"Look who's turned into a softie," Evelyn teased. Wednesday scoffed and got up, walking over to her closet to get ready. "What're you doing tonight?"
"Morgue activities," she replied. "Alone."
"We could make it, like, a date?"
"I don't want Thing to third wheel." Wednesday reappeared, dressed in her Nevermore uniform. "Besides, its...a bonding activity for the two of us."
Evelyn heaved herself out of bed, "well, I suppose I should be getting ready, too."
Wednesday walked over to the door and held it open for the girl. "I'll see you soon, Evelyn."
"Eager for me to leave, huh?" Evelyn teased, wandering over to the door.
"No, you need time to get ready. Class starts in forty minutes. Well, forty-five for you since you like to be fashionably late which is just enough time for you. So, you actually stayed too long."
Evelyn checked her phone, eyes widening at the time. Wednesday was exactly right. "Thank you, my little stalker. I'd be reporting you if I didn't like you so much."
Wednesday avoided her eyes as she uttered, "goodbye, Evelyn."
