Chapter Three: Eyes Savannah's POV
I ended up staying at school longer than I planned. I don't realize how much time passes by until the sun is setting, forcing me to either whip out a flash light from thin air or get my butt home. I choose the latter. After a short bus ride, I walk down the long narrow street to my house. By this time the street lights are on and the children who are usually out and about playing have gone inside. I look around, for what, I don't know. Feeling the breeze of the night roll through, I hug myself. Something feels...off.
I've never felt so uneasy on my own street, and I've wandered about much later than this. Suddenly, I feel eyes on me, burning, intense eyes. It's an unusually familiar feeling but it still frightens me. Who do I know with eyes so piercing?
Something clicks in my head. This whole situation seems unnervingly familiar. Just like my nightmare. Dark, long, narrow area, the feeling of someone watching me. Did I fall asleep on the picnic table outside of the school? Or are my dreams starting to haunt me in my wakefulness?
Slowly, I look up at the sky, cringing slightly. Please don't let there be a bloody moon, please don't let there be a bloody moon! When I see a half-moon, looking perfectly normal, and white, high in the black, shadowy sky, I laugh. I laugh long and loud. I even snort, hysterical. Realizing how crazy I must seem too my fellow neighbours I sober up. I continue walking. But the feeling of someone-or something-watching me is still there. In fact, its stronger than ever.
When I pass by a house a large golden retriever barks at me, protecting his territory, practically sending me jumping out of my skin. I put a hand to my now racing heart. Then I notice that the dog is not barking at me but something behind me. I look over my shoulder at the empty street. Nothing is there? What in the world is the dog barking at? That's when I feel it. The presence of of someones body right behind my own. Fear causes me to stiffen, my breathing to catch. Hot, heavy, breath brushes against my ear.
"Savannah," Whoever purrs out. I pinch my eyes shut and finally let out the breath I have been holding, allowing a gut wrenching scream to go out with it. Then I break out into a sprint down the sidewalk. Something hooks onto my leg and I fall face first into the gravel, my chin taking most of the blow. Tears spring to my eyes instantly. I touch my jaw and move it around, making sure it is still in place. I am still intact, thankfully, except a sore chin, possibly bruised, and some rocks stuck in my palms and knees. Ignoring the searing pain I scramble to my feet and push myself as fast as I can until I am safely through the front door of my house.
I slam the door shut behind me, lock it, then stare out the peep-hole while I try to calm my breathing. Who was that? What was it? Was I just attacked on my own street?
"Savannah?" I jump around faster than I ever knew I could. Remy flinches then takes in my appearance. She gasps and covers her mouth. I must look like a mess. Sweaty, messy hair, red face, dirty clothes. I put my hands on my knees, focusing on breathing. In and out. In and out.
"What happened to you? Are you all right?"
"I'm fine." I murmur and go towards the stairs. She gets in my path and holds my shoulders. She looks deep in my eyes, as if they will some how show her the strange event of tonight. Maybe they will.
"You don't look fine. You look like you've been to hell and back. Tell me what happened. Tell me!"
"I said I'm fine. I don't ask you about your life so don't ask me about mine. Mind your own freaking business for once." I spit out through clenched teeth. I push her arms of me. Hurt registers on her face. Do I regret the harsh words I have said to her? No. Hurting her will get her to leave the topic alone and that's what she needs to do. I need to get my head wrapped around what happened tonight. By myself. If I open up to her she'll just think I'm crazy then go run and tell mom and dad. I don't need that right now. Something is going and I need to figure it out. Now.
