The King and Queen of the Southern Isles already had 13 sons, before the Queen got pregnant again. For the first time, a girl was born and they named her Relena.
Relena grew up as a lovely princess, but the King and Queen were ashamed of her. Only because she was a girl. They never mentioned her in any conversation with other royalties. Crazy enough the King and Queen were kind to Relena, but that was just so that Relena wouldn't notice anything.
Only Hans, the youngest of the 13 sons, saw the way they treated her and to not break Relena's heart he didn't tell her anything, because he knew what it is like to be the shame of the family. After all, they became really close and he was her only friend.
