Tap. Tap. Tap. The pencil in my hand bobbed along to a random rhythm that frantically changed. Change, I hated it. He hadn't though, Stefan had embraced it and I would too. Somehow.

My leg swung back and forth as I sat idly in my college drama lecture, bored as the teacher went on about skills and maintaining a high level of determination throughout the year. I'd given up listening ages ago, the clock now my only source of entertainment. Tick. Tick. Tick. The hands were far too slow and time was dragging but I couldn't complain as I had an eternity ahead of me. An eternity without him but not alone. I had Elena and everyone, and Damon. I sighed as I thought of Bonnie's, Matt's and Jeremy's gravestones - at least they'd found peace.

My phone vibrated in my pocket.

"We need to talk. Now xoxo" Elena. It sounded urgent.

"Sure, lecture's nearly over xx" I replied, gathering my stuff. My pencil now safely in my bag as the teacher finished his lecture.

Exciting the lecture hall I bumped into my brunette friend. She was standing right outside the door. Something really was wrong.

"Hey Caroline," Elena smiled before taking my hand.

"Hey Elena," I smiled back.

"Oh my god, I have no clue where to start," Elena said, leading me outside and sitting me down on a bench. "I totally understand if you want to-"

"Just get to the point Elena," I laughed, setting my bag down.

"Klaus is here, he's studying fine art."

Whoa, what?! I sat there stunned. The Original hybrid who had promised to never come back after that one time in the woods. Was here now. He'd broken his promise, not that it surprised me.

"Caroline?" Elena took my arm, dragging me out of my thoughts. "Say something, please."

"I'm going to lie down," I smiled, hugging her. I couldn't let her see how badly I were hurting now, it wasn't fair on my best friend. She didn't deserve to feel guilty, Elena deserved to live her life with Damon, not desperately try and pick up my pieces.

Elena nodded, hugging me back.

It hadn't really sunk in yet. Klaus had come back. But what for?

I walked slowly back to my dorm, my heart heavy. I was going to have to face him sooner or later, in a corridor or at a party.

"Hello love, fancy seeing you here." The blond haired devil stood before me in the hallway of the living quarters.

Or I'd have to face him now.

"Don't act innocent, you knew I was here," I snapped, pushing past him. The familiar spark rushed through me as my hand made contact with his. No, I wasn't getting with Klaus.

"Love, what's wrong?" Klaus' smile instantly disappeared as he followed me to my room.

"You know what happened," I shook my head, opening the door to my room. "How the Heretics and Lilly tried to kill me and Elena."

"Love, is it true about Stefan?" Klaus hovered in the doorway, watching me.

"What do you think?" My voice cracked as I stood, arms crossed.

"I did not expect it to be true..." Klaus leant against the door frame. His expression had become sad as he took a deep breath.

"Really? Don't act all sad because I know you're not!" I shouted, throwing a pillow at him.

"Caroline I would never be that disrespectful." Klaus stood straighter, jaw clenching ever so slightly. "He was my friend and I knew him long before you did."

"Disrespectful?" I spat. "So killing Jenna and everyone else and then you threatening Tyler wasn't disrespectful at all? Controlling your siblings by daggering them if they interfered with your plans isn't respectful!"

"Love-"

"Don't you dare 'love' me, Klaus," I snapped, slamming the dorm door in his face. "Go choke on your next dastardly plan!"

"Please Caroline, don't do this," his voice pleaded through the door. "Love, I know it hurts and I know I promised I'd never come back but I can explain."

"I'm not wasting my time listening to your explanations, go away," I fell backwards onto my bed. "And Klaus?"

"Yes Caroline?" His voice was timid behind the door, only a few steps away, quiet for the powerful man who stood there.

"Go to New Orleans and never come back, stick to your word like a real man." The words left my mouth before I could stop them. Angry words which I instantly regretted, but good, because the idiot deserved to be hurt, as hurt as I was. Klaus the murderous hybrid who had hurt so many people.

"Caroline-"

"No Klaus!" I yelled.

"It would take me no time at all to find another lover!" He shouted back.

"Then go find one!" I threw another pillow at the door.

"But I want you, love!" Klaus shrieked, the door shuddering as he hit it. "I've spent sixty years trying to get over you and all it did was make me love you more!" A faint growl sounded from behind the door before angry footsteps echoed down the hall.

I let the tears fall then, fast and warm on my cheeks as I buried my head in the sheets. I didn't need him in my life right now. Not that I didn't want him. But Klaus definitely wasn't Stefan.
