Shi No Numa "Swamp of Death"

American outpost, Japan

"This is Team Alpha returning to base, over," I reported over the radio as I gazed at the heavy mist suspended in the air, floating on the pale swamp water. Our inflatable boat was guided towards the yellow glow of the lights illuminating some of the mist ahead, marking the position of the base. The swamp was eerily dead quiet apart from the gentle purr of the boat's engine and the sloshing of water against the sides of the boat. A cool breeze caused the long grass to sway ever so slightly.

"Roger that, Team Alpha, out," The radio crackled in response.

There were four of us on the boat,  our unusual equipment was laid around the seats. I held the bulky radio equipment while behind me someone was operating the boat at the stern. Next to me and in front of me the other two agents were sat. They, like me, wore black uniform. In the dim radiance of the torch that the agent at the bow was holding I couldn't clearly see their faces but I could see they were exhausted from their posture from the recent mission and looking forward to finally returning to the base.

We and about another dozen young men were part of an elite group situated at a new base in a swampy area of Japan working for a secret US military organization called Majestic 12. Several weeks ago I had discovered an extraordinary substance in the water close to the base. It was slightly blue in colour and appeared similar to an ordinary rock apart from the fact that in the night it subtly glowed.

The team were immediately interested in this new substance that I had just discovered so after we examined it more closely we found that it was in fact a completely new element. As this new element could give us a distinct advantage in the war the US military decided it was best to keep quiet about it and it was given the codename element 115.

After we collected a sample for testing in the top secret research facility Area 51 and the Pentagon we quickly fled in the worry we were being tracked by Japanese spies. A concern emerged that the Nazis had beat us to finding the element so we infiltrated an abandoned Nazi asylum called Wittenau Sanatorium in Berlin. We didn't find anything that suggested the Nazis had discovered the element but we found a Nazi scientist by the name Edward Richtofen. There wasn't enough time to question him, consequently we sent a distress signal so the situation could be resolved and we returned to Shi No Numa to collect more of the element and begin testing it to find any useful properties the element had. After collecting large quantities of Element 115 we still could find no useful properties but the scientists at the base remained hopeful and carried on working hard.

The four of us had just collected more of Element 115 and we were taking it to base so we could contribute it to our expanding supply of it.

Shrouded in the darkness of the night and mist that hung around the swamp, the base was only visible as we got close to it. The design of it was similar to Japanese buildings to make it inconspicuous which was very important because if Element 115 was to be discovered by any enemies or even our allies the security of the Majestic 12's operation would be compromised, resulting in disastrous consequences in terms of the war.

The building was partly on the land of the surrounding forest and partly over the swamp, supported with wooden struts. It was mostly made of wooden planks and logs from the forest with a straw roof with wooden beams.

Soon we were tied up in the boathouse and we went down to the cellar where the store of Element 115 was kept. It was kept in a large, lead safe which was big enough to fit a man inside. The safe was unlocked by a key that only I had and I always kept with me for security reason. As U opened the safe door there was the usual sharp screech of metal on metal, the Element 115 was glowing as it did at night and in such a large amount the other agents were amazed by its blue light. Carefully, I placed our new findings in the safe and locked the door again.
