Trenton looked around outside and, upon seeing something, screamed and ran back in, ducking inside a bale of hay with the middle holed out, like a cave.
Red flags shot up and I stood up automatically. "What is it?"
"A rabbit," he hissed, staring outside.
I almost fell over laughing as I walked through the open barn doors. Just outside, a fluffy bunny was hopping around curiously. I scooped it up and brought it in. "It's just a bunny!"
"An evil bunny! Look, it has gleaming red eyes."
I turned the bunny towards me and kissed its nose. "He has BLUE eyes, and seems quite tame," I cooed as I hugged it to my chest.
"Get the darn thing out of here!" Trenton protested.
"Oh, come on—"
"Out!"
I put the bunny down outside and walked back in. At his glaring expression, I fell into another fit of laughter. "My prince is a cowardly lion," I teased.
"Rabbits are evil. Have you seen how they eat carrots? It's like watching a tiger eat; they just can't get enough."
I played with my hair as I shook my head. "You are afraid of harmless little bunnies."
"Harmless?" Trenton muttered, flabbergasted. "The thing almost killed me! He was staring right at me, planning a devious murder."
I shook my head. "You're ridiculous."
"Am not," he retorted.
"You are hiding in a hay bale," I mused.
He quickly got out and brushed hay off his shirt. "Am not," he repeated.
I rolled my eyes, sitting down on the dusty floor.
Later that night, I lay awake positively freezing. "Is it usually this cold?" I asked, teeth chattering.
"Yeah."
"Why does your aunt make you stay out here?"
He tried to shrug but shivered instead. "She's my aunt. Not my mother."
It did not make sense to me, but I just nodded and curled in a ball. I lost balance and fell on my side, but didn't get up, too busy conserving body warmth. I saw him getting up from the corner of my eye. I closed my eyes tight as he walked towards me, carrying something huge. A heavy weight dropped over my body. A blanket. I peeked through one eye to see what he was doing.
"Cold, love?" he teased, laying down a respectful foot away from me.
"No duh," I replied softly. "How are you alive right now?" I didn't want him not to have any blanket, but I was not comfortable with sharing one with a guy. Even him.
His deep brown eyes engulfed me with their intensity and a shiver ran through my spine. He pulled himself up onto his elbow, worry creasing his eyebrows. "I apologize for not having anything more convenient. I didn't particularly think about nighttime, since I'm so used to the cold."
I shrugged noncommittedly. "I'll manage." I let my eyes flutter close, as if I could possibly get any sleep like this.
I felt his hand drop on my shoulder, caressing its shape. I opened my eyes again, meeting his immediately.
He dropped his hand. "Sorry."
I grinned. "No need to apologize." We watched each other for a few more minutes as the last light of day trickled away. The moonlight was hardly enough to see by, so I allowed sleep to reign me in.
