The next morning, Lily jolted awake by the sound of a sharp cry from the living room downstairs. She quickly threw on her bathrobe and slippers and ran down the stairs, going two steps at a time. When she reached the living room, she found her mother curled up on the couch sobbing. "Mom? Mom, what's going on? Mom!" Her mother looked up, tears streaming down her eyes. "The girls. Nina and Alice. Oh, Lily, I'm so sorry!" Lily could feel fear lurching up her throat. "Tell me, mom! What happened?" "They died last night. Their bodies were found on the floor of an abandoned house. It's on the news." At that moment, time stopped. Lily was completely distraught. Her friendship with Alice flashed before her eyes. The sleepovers, the study parties - it all seemed like yesterday. Now that she was gone, all Lily wanted to do was hide under her bed forever. "No! They didn't! It has to be a mistake!" Now anger welled up within her. "Lily, I know you're upset, but we have to be realistic, hun." This angered her even more, enough to have her screaming at her mother. "Why would she do this to me? I told her not to go, and she didn't listen. This is all my fault! I should have let you call her mother, I should have let her think I was a tattletale, and I should have gone to save her!" Lily dashed up the stairs and snatched up the picture frame on her dresser. It was of Lily and Alice, eating ice cream at their kindergarten end-of-the-year party. She stared at it, as anger crossed her face. She thought to herself: I told her NOT to go! I knew something was going to happen. She should have listened, I could have saved her life, Nina's as well! She quickly grabbed her large 'NYC' snowglobe and bashed the side against the picture. As Lily looked at the smashed picture and saw it. It made her shiver. Alice's face, which had been smiling that toothy smile, was frowning. Crying, maybe. Some would say it was the way the glass smashed. But Lily knew that was not the case. This frightened her, so she tucked the frame away under a pile of clothes in her dresser drawer. She crossed the room and sat on her bed. As she sat down, she heard the crumpling of paper underneath her. On the bed was a note. She opened it and, written in what looked like blood, was a message. Lily read:

IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT

This made Lily very nervous, so she ripped it up and threw it in the trash, all the while thinking, 'How did that note get there?
