THE FIRST THING JULIETTE felt wasn't pain. It was a hum.
It was a low, vibrating frequency that seemed to radiate from the walls, the floorboards and the very air she breathed. Her eyelashes fluttered against her cheeks, feeling as heavy as lead.
Her eyes snapped open.
She was lying in her bed, but the silk sheets felt like sandpaper against her skin.
The blonde could feel someone holding her hand, squeezing it as she glanced over to the figure next to her. Everything felt heavy.
"Juliette?"
The whisper came from next to her. To Juliette, it sounded like a shout. She bolted upright with a whine, the light felt too bright and every part of her body ached.
"Hey, hey, Juli?"
Juliette glanced over at the figure, immediately calming down when she noticed it was Elijah. A whine passed her lips as she leaned into him.
His expression, which was filled with worry, softened as he wrapped his arm around her waist, his thumb tracing slow circles against her skin. "How do you feel?"
