Broken ~ Chapter 1
The city streets were dark and empty. The only sound was the trees blowing in the strong wind. I carried on walking holding the metal in my hands for protection. I heard a sound and quickly turned round pointing the gun. But only a rat scurrying on the cold pavement. This city was no longer save and I had to keep my wits about me. I kept on walking looking around at the destruction caused. I shook my head and carried on. I turned down two streets and breathed deeply. This was the horific part. I carefully stepped over dead bodies. People I knew and people I had met. All gone. I stepped off the road and on to the blood splattered concrete steps. The wind blew furiously my hair covering my face. I flicked it away as I walked up the long stairs. I turned down an alley and climbed up another flight of stairs, now inside protected from the wind I quietly crept up. I stopped at the rusted metal door and lightly tapped. It swung open as I saw a little face. Not full of happiness and joy a child should experience but of pure terror. She walked back to where she was sitting on a long wooden bench.
I put down my gun on a kitchen surface and shut the door behind me.
I walked across the room to the beds. 11 of them all lined up as far away from the window as possible. Lying on one throwing a ball in the air was Jeremy Green. An x-military officer who had to leave his job to raise his family after hearing both his Mother and Father both died of the plague. He sat up and looked at me. I handed him the brown bag and a piece of bread.
He snatched the bag and ripped bits of bread off with his teeth. He peeped into the bag and nodded. I left him and walked over to the middle of the room where all the Children sat. I handed them all a piece of bread and a cup of milk each. I went to the kitchen area and poured 4 pints of beer. I took them to the other far side of the room and stood beside the table. 4 men sat playing cards. All with a cigar in their mouth.
"Oui Girl come er" one shouted at me.
I scurried over to him.
"Yeah" I replied.
"Go check" he ordered shooing me away.
I headed out the room but then I felt a small hand grip me tight on my hip.
I looked down at a little face.
"I gotta go" she said in her heavy south London accent.
I nodded as carried on walking her following. I picked my gun up on the way out.
We crept out the building and went around the side. I hurried down some more stairs and turned to her.
She walked forwards and went into the cubical. I looked out the window concentrating. I couldn't see any movement which was a very good thing. I watched the young girl as she wiped her hands on her clothes. Her hands were black and grubby they were covered in scars, cuts and bruises.
I walked in front of her and led her out. I quickly pushed her back in.
I looked as she fell heavily on the ground. I stuck my hand out my face looking at her. I showed no emotion towards her. In all fairness I knew nothing about this girl, not her name nor her back ground. But that wasn't any different to everyone else here, I had to trust them. I had been doing so for many years now.
"What was it?" She whispered.
I ignored her and got my phone out.
I dialled the numbers quickly.
"Its me I am in the cellar and we just saw one. Hurry" I said then hanged up.
She looked at me. I put my finger to my lips telling her not to talk. I slowly walked up to the window and looked.
Oh yes he was out there. Standing proud with a gun. He looked around at all the devastation him and his team had done. I felt in my pocket for my gun.
