Broken ~ Chapter 4

I ran as fast as I could the cold wind hitting my face making me shiver. I was wearing the clothes we were given; A thin brown top and brown long trousers. I was numb to the pain caused by my shot wound and my leg felt like it was about to give way. I had no idea where I was going or where I was going to go. But I had escaped and I knew I couldn't go back there, I had to go as far away as possible.

My bare feet were hitting the dry grass beneath me, it seemed like I was in a massive clearing and miles ahead was a forest. Pushing myself to go faster my leg gave way and I fell to the ground. Landing head first I was in agonizing pain. All I wanted to do though was push myself. I had to be further away and find help. I picked myself up and carried on but slower this time. The darkness around me made me feel un-safe.

I was just coming up to the forest when I heard the sound of cars and saw headlights lighting up around me. No. No! I ran faster and faster through bushes and was finally in the forest. I could just about make out some lights in the distance, so kept going strait.

I was coming out the forest, I was nearly there. My feet were no longer on dry grass but cold pavement. But the next thing that came was unexpected. A massive force jolting me to the side came quickly. The last thing I remembered was lying on the ground and cursing. All I could think about was I was going to go back. Back to hell.

My head was throbbing and my body felt numb. But I no longer felt cold. Trying to sit up I winced in pain.

"Shhhhhh you will only hurt yourself more." A voice soothed me.

I opened my eyes to see a beautiful young woman sitting next to me, Obviously much older than me.

"What?" I said confused.

Looking around I realized I was in what seemed like a camp. Tents were dotted around with a fire in the centre lighting up the night sky. Children dancing around the fire, laughing and singing. This place was full of people. Old and young. They seemed happy, like there was no such a war happening around us. I looked back to the young woman.

"My name is Gracie." She smiled warmly.

I looked at her puzzled.

"And your name is?" She laughed.

"My name...is....C-c-Carol. Carol Ann." I told her.

Her face lit up. "It's lovely to meet you Carol, may I say you have a beautiful name."

I manged a smile, a tear rolling down my face.

"Whatever is the matter?" She asked sweetly.

She had a look of concern on her face.

She was the only person who had been kind through this war. The only person who had talked to me like a human being, with such kindness and love.

"I-I just haven't talked to someone in so long." I told her truthfully.

She cooed and to my surprised pulled me into a hug. I hadden't had any physical contact in so long, and at that moment I wanted my Mother more than ever. I hugged her tight, breathing in her sweet smell. She broke away from the hug and looked over my shoulder. Following her gaze I saw a man who seemed less friendly standing by the fire. Turning back to the Gracie confused I saw her smile had disappeared and a frown had taken it's place. She was looking at the man very angrily.

"Do you have something to say to her." She hissed at him.

He looked at me disgusted.

"Henry." She raised her voice.

"I'm terribly sorry." His tone of voice made me scared.

"S-sorry?" I stuttered scared of the answer.

"Don't you remember?" Gracie asked softly.

"Remember what?" I questioned confused.

"I hit you with my truck. It was an accident and your fault actually." The man said coldy.

I tried to think back but couldn't remember a thing.

"I told you not to drive so damn fast." Gracie shocked me out of thought.

"I wasn't!" He shouted.

I felt some what awkward being in the middle of their argument.

"Anyway how you feeling?" Gracie asked turning back to me and smiling.

I tried to sit up again and gasped. My wound had got infected and I had a massive bruise from the hit covering most my right side. I winced when I touched it.

"It will take a while to heel." Gracie told me looking down at my hurts.

"Oh she will be fine." The man said with no emotion.

Gracie snapped her head back to him, sat up and pulled him away. I watched as they argued once more. But wasn't ready for the next thing I wittnessed, he gave her what looked like a painful slap on her cheek. I gasped but then looked away when they both looked over at me. Gracie came back smiling.

"Where's your family?" She asked.

I looked down at the ground and shrugged, she gasped.

"You mean...you...escaped a camp?" She said horrified.

It felt like everything around me stopped. The music being made by some men with intruments stopped. The children dancing stopped. The chatter stopped. I felt all eyes on me.

Clearing my throat I answered. "Yes."

Her eyes widened and she bolted up. Returning back to the man they talked more, some others joining their discustion.

"Are you crazy she's going to get us all killed!" I heard somene shout.

"We need to protect her and in return she can help." I heard Gracie say.

"What use is she?" A voice returned.

After some more muttering everyone gathered around me, Gracie stepping infront of everyone.

"Welcome to your new home." She smiled.
