My lips trembled as I kept my eyes down.
She was right, I had no business disgracing her prestigious home with my unworthy body.
“It was a mistake to come here” I said finally meeting her eyes,
“it will never happen again ma’am.”
“Nicole” Rick started to say,
I ignored him and ran.
I ran with no clue of where or to what I was running to. I just needed to get away from that house, away from the consequences of my mother’s actions, away from it all. I didn’t even look back, not like I would have to I can picture it already.
Rick is definitely getting an earful from his mother about bringing scandalous girls like myself to her glorious estate. She was probably going over and over about what the neighbors would think; that’s the thing with rich people…its all about appearances.
I sighed deeply and paused from my running to sit down on a bus bench. My tears had dried to my face from the running. While I was sitting there, an elderly woman came and stood next to me with he bags of groceries.
“Oh im sorry ma’am, would you like to sit down?”
I asked rising to my feet.
“What the hell do I look like a charity case?” she shot back.
“I don’t need your pity missy, I just lost my glasses, had to do 4 loads of laundry, babysat my daughter’s brats and feed my blind dog who decided to knock the entire bag of dog food all over my freshly mopped kitchen floor.”
I stared at her blankly.
“And now I gotta wait for this damn bus to go to my sister in law’s, and for the love of god wipe your face, child you look a mess.”
She handed me some wet naps.
“You kids today don’t give a damn about your appearance."
I stood wiping my face in the reflection of a window.
Add this to the list of why today is a ‘great’ day, I thought to myself.
“There, now you look more presentable, you’re actually not bad to look at…just keep that face clean.”
I fought off the urge to say something smart or sarcastic to her, this lady looked like she got a few good comebacks herself.
Instead I just thanked her and stood as far away from her as possible while I waited on the bus.
SCREEEECCCHHHH.
It finally pulled up, not a moment too soon.
“Damn it” I swore under my breath, I had forgotten my money.
“Card or Money miss” the driver said to me in monotone.
“Uh I forgot my card and I don’t have any money” I told him, sheepishly running a hand through my hair.
“Excuse me miss?” I heard someone say.
“You uh, dropped your card”
he was tall with chestnut brown hair that fell in locks on his face.
He flashed a quick smile at me.
“Oh thank you so much sir, I was distraught over the thought of losing my beloved card!” I cried playing along.
“Hey can we get this reunion moved to a bus seat?!”
I heard the grumpy grandma yell from the back of the line.
We both grinned and he swiped my card for me, then handed it back.
I picked a seat in the very back, and he sat next to me.
“So, what is the name of my recent savior?” I asked with a smirk.
“His name, my lady is Lance” he said with a bow and flashed me another cute smile.
“Well sir Lance, I am Nicole”
I said offering him a smile of my own.
“Well, it seems the lady has a beautiful smile” he said grinning at me.
I scoffed and tried to hide my blush.
“So who’s card was that?” I asked changing the subject.
“My extra one, I’m sure glad I had it today” he said as he leaned back into his seat.
“So where are you headed?” He asked studying my face curiously…too curiously.
I looked out the window so I wouldn’t have to face him.
“I’m heading home to West Brook” I said leaning my head against the cool window.
“Really?” he said “I’m from West Brook and I haven’t seen you around before.”
Ok, he had my attention now.
“You...from West Brook? Yeah right” I said eyeing his preppy appearance.
“I had to go to court today, but this is not what I would usually wear” he said grinning at me again.
“Mhm”
I said skeptically then turned my attention back to the window; I was almost home thank god.
“How bout when we get to West Brook I go change then maybe we can go for a walk or something” he said with this look that melted my heart.
I nodded at him as the bus pulled up to West Brook Apartments
