Ray finished his cigaret and told me we needed to go back in soon. I stood up and grabbed his hand. When we entered I heard my name echoing across the room.
"Kelsey, just a moment." I saw the manager of the hotel walking towards us.
"What's wrong Mr. Donavon?"
"No more running through the lobby please dear."
"I'm sorry Mr. Donavon."
"Well, that's quite alright. It is Christmas, I just don't want you to get hurt or anything." He smiled, eyes crinkling.
"Who's your friend?"
"Oh this is my friend Ray."
"Will he be staying in your apartment for Christmas?" He peered at me over his glasses.
"Yes sir, in the spare bed."
He smiled down at us and nodded approvingly.
"Merry Christmas Kelsey, Raymond." He turned and slowly walked away, supporting himself with his cane.
"You too, Mr. Donavon." As we got on the elevator Ray asked who he was.
"He's the manager of the hotel, known him since I was ten years old. We didn't really talk much the first year, but when I was eleven I accidentally started a fire. He was walking by, heard me screaming, came in and put it out, been my father figure ever since."
"What did you light on fire?"
"My Barbie, turns out you can't put them in the microwave to dry them."
"Right." He laughed. We reached the top floor and went to my apartment.
"So you've lived here since you were ten?'
"Yep. Pretty much by myself, dad occasionally visits. He pays for it every month, he's actually quite wealthy."
"Oh, well I guess you already had a phone then didn't you?"
"Not really, I don't like asking dad for anything more than my usual allowance. And I don't like spending that either." I laughed at the thought, I really don't like spending my money.
"I just use the corded phone if I need to call someone, I have a laptop for Facebook and stuff."
"Oh, so are you hungry?"
"I'm always hungry."
"Want some pancakes?"
"I'm always game for some pancakes."
We went to the kitchen and I started rummaging through cabinets.
"Sit." He told me, pulling out a chair.
"No, you sit. I'm the cook around here. You can watch the TV or something." I gestured to the TV mounted on the wall in front of the table. He stared at it perplexingly.
"I watch the cooking channel in here a lot." When I turned it on, they were showing a rerun of Chopped. I pressed recall and an episode of The Amazing World of Gumball came on.
"Here, watch what you want." He left it alone as I started the pancakes.
"Have you ever seen a TV?"
"Not much." He shrugged, eyes fixed on the screen. He watched two more episodes when I had finally set a plate of chocolate chip pancakes in front of him.
"Those look amazing." He took a big bite.
"Oh my god those are amazing!"
"Bam! Chef Kelsey rules again!"
I screamed, sitting down beside him and eating my own pancakes. He turned the TV off and we ate our pancakes while talking about which were better, pancakes or waffles.
"Pancakes are obviously the best."
"But waffles are better tasting, muscular, sexy, pancakes!" Ray argued.
"Steroids are bad for pancakes." I sneered at him
"They aren't on on steroids, they go to the gym." He shot back.
"This is ridiculous, I'm done arguing with you."
"Well fine! My pancakes are getting cold anyway."
"Fine." We ate in silence, playful scowls playing on both our faces. After we ate, I stood up and gathered our dirty plates.
"No way baby, you cooked, I get to clean." Ray told me, taking the dishes and walking to the sink. Hopping up on the counter, I noticed he had a devilish smirk playing on his lips.
"What?"
"Oh nothing," He washed the next plate, "I just thought I'd do some laundry while I'm at it." He said, gesturing to a stain on my shirt from where I must have spilled syrup on it.
"What? Oh my god!"
He sprayed me with freezing cold water where the stain was.
"What's wrong with you?" I shouted as I shivered, clutching my wet shoulder. He smirked again and ran away from me, he probably would have hit the ground had I not chased after him. Ray ran a lot faster than I thought he would. He bolted through the living room, sprinted down the hall, and finally locked himself in the bathroom.
"Let me in!" I shrieked from the hall.
"Never!" I started beating on the door with all the force I could muster. Water started running from inside the room.
"Are you seriously taking a shower right now?"
"La-la-la-la-la-la-la! I can't hear you!"
"You know, you don't have any soap or anything in there!"
The water shut off and out sprang a partially wet, though thankfully clothed, Ray.
"Let's go shopping then!" He grabbed my hand and bounced up and down in excitement.
"Well... I guess we could go to the mall."
"Get dressed woman! I wanna go!" I started walking to my room and felt like I was dragging a sack of bricks on both of my ankles.
"What are you doing?" I asked when I saw Ray struggling to go the other way.
"You have to come stand outside my door so I can change." His eyes widened, but he followed me. We went in my room so I could reach my dresser and I had him stand there long enough for me to pick an outfit.
"Okay, now out!"
He walked out and closed the door, but still had to remain standing next to it as I tugged my new clothes on.
"Are you done yet?"
"One second!" I opened the door and walked out.
"So how do I look?" I was wearing my jean shorts that came a half an inch below my finger tips, black converse, and my Batman tank top.
"Really Kels, a tank top?"
"Do you want to wait for me to change?"
"No." He handed me my sweater. "You're gonna need this." I gave a quick glance around the apartment, locked the door, and we walked to the elevator. As we reached the bottom floor I realized that I forgot my skateboard, then I remembered something else.
"Do you know how to skateboard?"
"Umm... no."
"Didn't think so. Alright we can walk then."
"Can't we drive?" He asked, shaking a pair of keys in my face.
"You have a car?!"
"Not exactly." He smirked, leading me outside. By the time we reached the parking lot he covered my eyes.
"Okay baby, Surprise!" He took his hands away, revealing a beautiful black Harley Davidson motorcycle.
He handed me a helmet and grinned.
"Wanna drive?"
"I- I'd better not, I'd probably kill us. Where did you get this though?" I ran my hands across the seat and the handle bars.
"Where do you think?" He smirked, reminding me of where he came from. Ray smiled as he brushed the snow off and climbed on the seat.
"C'mon." He held his hand out for me. He grinned broadly and his pupils expanded.
"Hold on tight." He turned the key and slammed on the gas. I gripped his torso tightly as the cold wind pierced through my sweater.
"Where is the mall?" Ray shouted.
"Take a right!" He made the sharp turn and hit the brakes for a stoplight. I took the chance to pull on the helmet he had tossed me earlier.
"Take a left after this." After about 15 minutes of screaming over the the wind, we finally made it to the mall.
"We have to share choosing stores." He told me edgily, obviously worried I would drag him only to girly stores.
"Alright, but I choose first." I considered dragging him to Victoria's Secret to embarrass him but then I realized I would probably be embarrassed too, so I changed my mind.
"Let's go to my favorite store!"
"Okay." He readily agreed. We ran through the mall until I heard loud music pulsing through the air. We walked in and I smiled at the store.
"Oh cool! Kelsey what is this place?" Ray asked me as he saw the first display of Star Wars stuff.
"Heaven. Sheer Heaven." I smiled. He followed me to the Harry Potter and excitedly started talking.
"Oh my God, I love Harry Potter!" He shouted at me. He took me by surprise when he told me this, I guess he noticed how my eyebrows had raised slightly.
"I do have a personality, I wasn't programmed or anything weird like that." He said softly, appearing hurt. I didn't know what to do so I apologized and showed that had a Deathly Hallows charm on it. He told me it was cute and showed me a vial of fake love potion. He smiled and didn't set it back on the shelf as he walked by it. After about an hour of poking around the store Ray bought the fake love potion, a set of headphones that had Jack Skellington on them, and something he kept hidden and refused to show me. I bought similar headphones but mine had Captain America on them, the Harry Potter necklace, and a keychain that looked like a broomstick for Ray. He kept his bag close to him as we left the store. Next we went to Hollister and Ray picked out some clothes for himself. Then Bath and Body Works to pick out some 'girly' soaps for me. And finally we went to some dude store so Ray could get stuff for his shower, that included more of his amazing cologne. We glanced down at Ray's wrist watch and were shocked, 4:07! We've been in here for hours.
"Do we really have to stop?"
"Eh, not yet, mall closes at 5."
It was my turn to choose again, but I would've went back to Hot Topic so I let Ray choose the last store. He looks around a bit and finally saw a store that made his eyes light up. He covered my own eyes as he led me away. "Umm, Ray? Where are we going?"
"Just walk, will you promise to do one thing that I want?"
"Eh, sure." I shrugged my shoulders, what's the worst that could happen? I heard a high pitches vibrating sound and what sounded like gum popping.
"Who wants what?" A female voice asked.
"Both, we'll need a moment. C'mon Kels." He led me 6 steps to the left and pulled his hand away, revealing a huge selection of tattoos.
"Woah." I gasped.
"Which one do you want?"
"What? No, I'm only seventeen, I can't get one."
"Aw come on, you promised!" He gave me those gosh darn puppy eyes. My walls fell down within seconds.
"What should I get, I can fake my dads signature or something." Ray grasped me in a tight hug and turned back to the wall if tattoos.
