To feel comfort where you'd otherwise feel none. A silly notion that gives us all hope in the worst of situations.
It was late around 10:00 an hour after bedtime. And I needed to pee!
On my way back from my emergency break I heard something. As I crept down the stairs I was extra careful not to make noise.
As I peard into the living roo, I saw dad. He was watching one of his cop movies. Dad loved old movies especially westerns and cops ones. Dad was a cop too so it made sense to me.
One the the screen a dark man was tied to a chair.
Was he a criminal of war being investigated?
A police make walked behind him and tried to put some sort of black cap on him.
Why would he need that?
And the man began to choke out what I vuagly called words."Please Roger don't that shale on me. Don't put me in the dark. I is frad of the dark." He said to a cop. He had tears in his eyes and he trembled. His lips quivered as he spoke.
The cop nodded and agreed. At this point I was nervous. I thought about leaving but I wanted to know what happened next.
The man began covering the other in water.
no...
"Rodger?"
"Yes John?"
"You knows I is a innocent man?"
"Yes I do."
No.
Rodger flipped a switch.
NO!
John began to jolt and twitch wildly. He screamed like hell and his eyes rolled back in his head. His skin was black and smoking. The onlookers cheered or looked away. But Rodger stared for what seemed like hours then cryed silently after everyone left.
I could figure out why and how this happened.
Was this what death was? Wouldn't that happen to me if I died? Whould it hurt me?And why out a cop do that? Police save people and help lost children. Don't they?Did my daddy do this too?
I chocked out a sob just loud enough for him to hear. I broke down. I didn't understand why.
Dad turned around and saw me in the doorway. Gingerly he stood up and kneeled in front of me. But even at that level my father was still an imposing figure.
"Ruby are you ok? Did you have another nightmare?"
I shook my head no, wiping my eyes on my pajama sleeve. I ran to my room.
I curled up at the end of the bed to get my thoughts together. Breathing became hard and my head hurt. Then all of a sudden it was gone. I was far away in my happy place.
"Hey there."
A voice came forth light and feathery.
"You can see me right?"
I opened one of my eyes and was shocked it find I wasn't in my room nor in my bed. I was in a field of wheat and barley near an old oak tree on a distant hill. A place I've never been but always seen in my dreams. My happy place.
"Hey, hey open your eyes."
