Hallows
As we entered the unearthly hallows, we all kept our wits. We watched one another as we watched the land. You may ask why we were watching one another. Well, you see we were all mercenaries, and the life of a merc is not an easy one. One moment you may be in the midst of battle and the next you may be face down in the dirt dead, killed by the man you trusted. But let’s get back to the story.
We descended into the deathly dark channels of tunnels. We wandered through the dark until we saw a light out in the distance. We continued toward the light until we exited the small tunnel. In the illumination of the torches there was a large stone gate that traveled to the peak of the ceiling stretching all the way to the stalactites hanging down. Around the outer edges of the gate were ancient symbols. As Max knelt down with a pad and pen to translate the language, I set down my pack and pulled out a C-4 charge that weighed about ten pounds. I set down the charge, primed it, swung my pack onto my back, and tapped him on the shoulder. After he had realized what I had done he got up and we ran to the edge of the cavern. I primed the detonator and pushed the pin. The blast rocked the entire cavern and the stone doors crumbled to the ground. Deep within the caverns a beast let out a ferocious roar that shook the caverns once more. We had no idea what we were walking into. Now that I think about it today we should have known better.
We did not think we were crazy not until we reached the gate. That was when I realized something was wrong. But I think I should tell you why we were down there in the first place. We were hired by a fifteen year old kid. He paid us fifteen thousand dollars to kill the devil. Now, I know what you’re thinking. A fifteen year old kid why do a job for a kid. Well when you are a merc money is money, no matter who it comes from. Know this kid wanted us to assassinate the devil. Now at the time I laughed at the idea but this kid was serious. So we took the money and just to satisfy the kid we traveled into the hallows. Now that I look back on the conversation with him, I realize that I should have listened to him.
We walked into a giant corridor. Then as I was sure that the kid was crazy, an arrow flew toward us and embedded itself in the throat of the man next to me. As the arrow protruded out of his jaw and he fell to the ground we took cover behind some of the stone pillars. As the arrows flew through the air the demon army charged into the room from all of the different tunnels. We ran at them across the room archers flung arrows into the crowed of fighters. Us, a team of twenty men against thousands of others, fought as men fell. We continued to fight. As arrows flew through the air and metal clashed on metal, I felt a power building inside of me. It felt as if a fire had lit inside of my stomach. I felt the power grow and grow until the power exited through my sword and it burst into flames and glowed crimson red. I ran into the crowed of demons and swung my deadly sword. With each swipe blood covered the tip of my blade, and with each death I felt power build. As I ran through the hordes of demons I would wipe them away with a wave of my hand. They would go flying into the walls and I would continue my rampage.
After most of the fighting had gone to separate parts of the corridor. We would fling arrows at one another and those that went down were replaced by another. I notched a arrow and pulled back the string and let it fly into one of the reinforcement tunnels. The tunnel collapsed as the arrow exploded. As the battle erupted in the cavern the stalactites started to fall from the ceiling. I aimed my bow at a cluster of them and let the magic flow through me. I released the arrow and it embedded itself into the rocks. Seconds later the arrow exploded and the stalactites fell and a group of demons scattered. The stalactites pierced through many of the demons and I started to think that we might just have a chance.
I told all my men to open fire and to launch a hail of arrows into the air. As they did many dropped and as the hail of arrows dropped I snuck around and silently killed those behind cover. When it was done I stood up and immediately the hail of arrows stopped. One more ran toward me and I whipped my hand to the side and the thing went flying into the wall there was a crack and it started to get up. He looked at me and drew his bow. As he drew back the string I pointed up. He looked up and a stalactite fell on him splitting him down the center. I started to walk down the only tunnel left, knowing that the devil would be down there. I walked to a pair of smaller gates and kicked them open. Just as I walked in I was thrown into the wall by an unknown force. Being knocked unconsious.
