meeting the devil

When I came to I stood up slowly. My vision was blurred to a high extent. I stumbled into a large room and after my vision cleared I saw a throne in the middle of the room, and on it, the devil himself. I started to walk to him when an arrow flew strait toward my head. I stuck my hand in front of my head and caught the arrow in between my fingers. The arrow was an inch from my head. I took the arrow and threw it into the archer that stood to the devils left. The devil clapped his hands and commented me on my improvements. “You may have very excellent use of your skills especially for such a short time. But you will be no challenge for me.” “Well I didn’t have much time to figure this out. I just kind of learned.” I pulled out my bow and shot toward the guard on his right. The guard ducked and the arrow flew by him. The guard laughed and the arrow hit the wall and turned around and shot him in the back of the head. The arrow protruded out of the front out the guard’s mouth. As blood poured out of his open jaw, the guard fell to the ground with a heavy thump.

The devil stood and pulled out a large staff. The tip of his staff burst into bright blue flames. I knew that the real battle was about to begin. I pulled out my sword and it burst into crimson red flames. He swung his staff and it struck down an inch in front of my head. I took my sword and dropped it down. The devil raised his staff with blurring speed and my sword rebounded off his staff. I went staggering back and rebounded. Just before the devil could bring his staff down on me I raised my sword. The blow sent me staggering and the devil raised his staff again and brought it down on my back. Everything started to go black; before I could slip out of consciousness I got up and continued to fight. Metal clanged against metal as we fought. He swung down his staff and I was thrown through a thin wall.

I got back up and was ready to fight when I heard a weary moan        behind me. I turned around and saw Max lying on the ground. I ran over to him and saw that he was chained to one of the pillars. I wrapped my hands around the chain and dipped into my power. The chain broke in two and I helped Max to his feet. “I need help”, I told him an urgent tone. “We need to end this”. We exited the hole in the wall and the devil did not seem worried. “You ready”, I asked him. “As I’ll ever be”, he replied. We drew our swords and the tips lit a bright crimson red. We charged the devil and embedded our swords into his lifeless heart. He laughed as if he had heard a funny joke. Then I jumped and kicked him back into the wall. A crack protruded from the wall and the wall shook with such ferocity. Then as he began to get up a stalactite fell and crushed him. We had finally done it. We had killed the devil.

I slung Max’s arm around my shoulder and we began to leave the hallows. We exited out of the destroyed gate, climbing over the stone rubble. And as we began to exit finally seeing daylight we had finally had our faith back. As we were ready to exit the hallows the devil materialized in front of us. We drew our swords once again ready to fight. The devil swung down his staff and the entire cavern rocked. We were thrown and knocked unconscious. When I came to I was laying in the tree line and I heard a distant roar from inside the hallows. The devil stood at the edge of the tunnels and he stood there as his army flooded around him. And as his army flooded onto our land, the kid that had hired us walked to the devil. There was a loud crack as the boy’s neck cracked. The boy fell to the ground dead. As this happened Max told me what the gates had said. “All who may open this gate prepare for a conscious that will never rest peacely again”. As the boy fell I had finally realized it. We were not hired to kill him we were hired …………….To free the devil.

I watched as the unnatural beast poured out of the hallows. As my friends pulled me out of the tree line, flying mounts flew over us with long tentacles flopping behind it. It wore a metal helmet and screeched as it flew over us. My friends dragged me into a clearing where I heard the faint noise of an infant screaming.  Tom knocked on a small patch of grass, and there was a dull thumping noise. The grass lifted as someone opened the door. “What’s up?” someone asked as the door opened. “It’s happened”, Tom explained, “the world as we know it is about to end and there’s nothing we can do about it”. We dropped into the cave and in it was something I could never imagine. Families were huddled together and kids actually played ball like nothing was happening. Here, they could laugh and play when just outside the world was ending right above them. “All elders report to the dining hall now”. All of the adults started to get up when above explosions shook the entire world. And that, that was when our world ended.

As the explosions rattled the underground fortress the elders made their way to the dining hall deep in the maze of tunnels. After all of the elders had been seated Tom stood at the front of the entire crowed and raise his hand in a silencing gesture. The entire crowed went quiet. Tom began, “We have now been faced with a powerful enemy. We will not be able to hide from this enemy any longer we will not be able to fight unless we can find the old magicians and have them unite. And I have before you one of the magicians”. Tom ushered for me to walk to the front of the crowed and as I did the crowed watched with such intensity. “Gelb, I want you to tell them everything you can. Leave nothing out”. So I began to tell them about the beast that only the magicians could kill, I told them about how the odds were stacked very high against us. With only a few select magicians in the world anymore we had very little odds of winning. I told all those that want to leave may, they would not be a cowered of any sort. But in the end, everyone stayed and none chose to leave so I told them to prepare for the fight of their lives. And only some of us if any would make it home.
