After setting me down on the couch, Dad told me to hold on. He pulled Mom off upstairs, where I could hear them arguing about something. I assumed they were debating whether or not to tell me about who "he" was. But that was just a guess. For all I knew they could've been prepping to inform me about the birds and the bees.
So, being the good little boy that I was, I held on tight.
Now, a lot of main characters out there had already learned about the dreaded subject before the book started. Me, on the other hand, had no idea that I was an alien from another planet. For all I knew, everything could be completely different. Excuse me if I was a little on edge.
Turns out, though, everything is basically the same. Nibiru had almost an exact replica of Earth's environments and organisms, so luckily I could do it like the rest of them. So I had nothing to worry about.
Other than the guy that was chasing my parents down.
I looked around at my house. It wasn't as big or as fancy as the Bonds', but it was cozy. In fact, and I didn't realize this until years later, the reason I liked this house so much was because every aspect of it was normal. So much crap had happened in the last 48 hours that I felt like Mr. Fantastic being stretched in different directions. Don't get the reference? Look it up.
I didn't get why I was so...tired. I mean, most kids dream about having superpowers, and I did too. Up until two hours ago I was enjoying this. But I never had a chance to realize what this meant for me. I was an alien. I had superhuman powers, and on top of that I had to hide it from the world. This wasn't just changing my life, but the world too. I mean, I was living proof that E.T. could be out there somewhere.
I barely had time to think about this before my parents came back into the room. They looked every bit distressed as they sat down across from me on the other couch. That made me really nervous. I knew as a fact that my parents always sat next to each other when they had bad news. First it was that we had to move, then it was because I blew up a science lab, now this. Trust me, I had 13 years of experience.
And it always ended badly.
Dad folded his arms. "Peter, your mother and I have been doing some talking. We know that our situation has come as a shock to you, but we have something that might cheer you up."
He opened up his jacket and pulled out something that resembled a long roll of toilet paper. It looked like it belonged in a bathroom, rather than being offered to me as a gift. He handed it to me.
"Wow, thanks guys," I said. "I love it! Now I can wipe whenever I want!"
I gave the "present" back. Dad laughed and put it on the table.
"It's not toilet paper, Pete," Mom said. "It's a list of all know Galactic Powers. Every new power we encountered in the war we documented on scrolls like these. We nabbed this right before we were sent off. Your father seems to think that this will help your Hyper recognize what its power is, and therefore what your's is. It's a stupid idea."
Dad scoffed. "The boy needs to know what his power is so he can control it. This cannot get out to the public. Peter has already been beat up once, and who knows who else wants a piece of him. The kid is completely defenseless."
"Thanks Dad." I said. But secretly I was jumping up and down. This wasn't bad news at all; it was just the opposite of that! I got to learn what my power was. Screw being tired, I was a freaking superhero!
"We know that you saved us before, but you were all juiced up on hormones and adrenaline. Face it, you need your power to defend yourself. We have no idea who or what you might face in the future. We might not have been the only people that escaped."
