We stood there for a couple of seconds, staring at each other, waiting for someone to break. After what seemed like forever, she let go of my shirt. I fell to the ground, scuffling away from her like she sprouted a second head.
Yeah. I know. I have supernatural powers and I'm afraid of a 15-year old girl. But boy, could she stare. It was like trying to lift weights with my corneas. I am proud to say that I kept up the stare until I couldn't take the silence anymore.
"So, tough morning, huh?"
She dropped the book and slammed me against a wall, pressing up against me. If it had been under different circumstances, I would've been thrilled about a member of the opposite sex cornering me in the bathroom. But these weren't different circumstances. And she was strong as hell, lifting me at least an inch off the ground.
"Listen Cotton, I don't have time for your shit. I want you to tell me what you did to my diary, or I swear to god I'll beat the ever-loving crap out of you."
I almost laughed since I had a good 4 inches on her. However, considering how hard her forearm was pushing against my throat, I didn't.
"You're kind of cutting off my air supply, Jessica Jones," I said hoarsely.
She gave me a good shove against the wall before releasing me. "Tell me."
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
She lifted me up again, and glared at me with her killer eyes. Suddenly something clicked in my head, and I said, "You have the most beautiful eyes."
Oh yeah, good going Pete. Complement that crazy strong female psychopath. She'll definitely let you go then. In fact, she just might not beat your ass! But to my surprise, I felt her grip slack a little bit. I took that as a sign.
"What color are they?" I said again. "I've never seen eyes that were that pale."
She dropped me after that. Looking at me weirdly, she studied me closely, as if I was a bottle of water on a hot day. After a while she became uncomfortably close, so I slowly slid out of the corner I was in and made a break for the door. I didn't make it that far before she pulled me back and once again slammed me against the wall. She once again asked me what happened to her diary.
I was starting to get real tired of that. "Look, Juliet, or what ever your name is, I honestly don't know what happened to you diary. Maybe you just grabbed the wrong book or someone took it by accident."
With one hand, she kept me strung up like a picture on the wall and grabbed the book behind her. Opening it, she showed me the blank pages inside. "I know this book like the back of my hand. I've had it with me since I was nine and written in it whenever I could. This is still my book. So either the ink disappeared straight off the book or you tampered with it."
I raised an eyebrow. "Look, I don't know how you feel about me, but I wouldn't tamper with you or your book. I really don't know what happened."
However, as I said it, the hyper did a weird vibration in my head and suddenly I could see all the diary's contents. I read all about her everyday life, her struggles after her brother died, and her hatred for me. I could feel it radiating off her, like a heat lamp. And for some reason, I was haunted by it. I mean, I barely knew the girl, but I somehow felt like I'd betrayed my best friend. Like she was my best friend.
Like I'd known her all my life.
She slapped me, getting my attention. "Hello? God, is there anyone home in the stupid head of yours?"
"Not usually," I said. "Sometimes my cousins stop by, but all they want is my free wifi."
"Ugh," she said, tossing me aside. She started angrily shoving her stuff back into her backpack, which had been sprayed across the room. I caught her tearing up, so I started to pick up some of her things. She looked at me in disgust before grabbing her pencil pouch from my grasp. Once she zipped up her pack and wiped her eyes, she started to leave, but the same click happened inside my head.
