I knew something was up when I heard the name I had prayed to evilness's (but now goodness's) sake that I would never have to hear again. It was about a week after the coronation, where Mom and I had the smack down of the century, that I was walking through the corridor with Evie talking about the upcoming quiz in History class when I heard it.
Edwin.
I suddenly stumbled onto the ground in shock at the mention of his name. Evie, murmuring in the back of my head trying to get me to stand up, was dazed as to what had just happened.
"D-Did you hear it," I asked Evie as I rose off of the floor.
"Heard what Mal," Evie asked, even more confused than I?
I knew I had heard someone saying his name behind me, but I couldn't recollect the voice. Maybe it just was in my head. I was paranoid with slipping up now that I had pledged myself to goodness. I was probably just crazy. A battle with the Mistress of Evil will do that to you.
"Nothing. I just thought I had heard someone talking about a fabric sale. I know how you love your fashion," I said, returning to my normal level of confidence.
Then Evie went into a tizzy about how excited she was for a made up fabric sale. Arriving in the courtyard to meet Doug and Ben for lunch was the only thing that got her to shut up. Now that the seasons were changing, the courtyard was dotted with "Go Auradon" sweatshirts. I was fine with my leather jacket and Evie wore her cloak, but Doug and Ben were no exceptions to the sweatshirt. The boys sat under a large tree, that had already begun shedding its leaves, with a picnic basket and a cheesy red and white checkerboard blanket.
"What took ya so long," Ben asked with that boyish charm in his voice?
"We would've been her sooner, but Mal decided to fall over in the hallway just to tell me about a sale," Evie said, plopping herself on a picnic blanket.
I shot Evie a look and she stuck her tongue out at me. All of us quickly got to talking while Ben held my hand. His touch was firm, yet gentle at the same time. Just like a good King should be. I don't suppose Auradon's has ever a 16 year-old King before though. Every moment I was with him it was almost as if he was making me a better person by just smiling. While we chatted Evie and Doug plated paper bowls of salad for us with sandwiches to eat. We all sat in the chilling Autumn shade and just relaxed.
After the earlier mishap everything else just went easier. I went through my last four classes of the day and headed back to the dorms to find a note Evie had left about her leaving for the sale. Whoops. I decided to see if Jay or Carlos were around because Ben was off at some meeting, trying to get something through with the senate. Apparently he wanted to do something involving the Isle that they weren't approving. He wanted to make it a surprise though, so he hadn't told anyone yet.
I walked across the hall to find Carlos buried in some video game that took 3 minutes to get him out of. After he snapped back to reality he told me that Jay went to the library to check out a book about Tourney and its many famous teams, so I sat down and played the game with Carlos for a while with Dude, Carlos's dog, on my lap. I could see why Carlos was so addicted to it. I guess video games were just Carlos's outlet considering he was the worst Tourney player in the team. It was good then that the season was ending in 2 weeks because of the new semester.
We were both startled out of our seats when Jay came barging through the door, looking like he'd seen a ghost.
"What's up with you, bro," Carlos asked?
Coming to sit next to us Jay said, "I-I heard some of the girls talking. Supposedly Erin heard from Audrey, who heard from Lauren, who heard from Jane, who heard from Lonnie that..."
Jay's voice trailed off but unfortunately I think I knew where this was going. We both stared at each other in horror.
"What? What! WHAT!!," Carlos demanded. "I don't understand your secret eye language!!"
"Lonnie overheard Ben saying that," Jay started. "Edwin has been the next student selected to come to Auradon."
