When Millie succeeded in dragging Zoe into the classroom, there was already someone there, sitting quietly at their desk. A short, geeky looking boy looked at them through big glasses with a mix of fear and curiosity. Zoe offered a half smile as she walked straight to the back of the class. Millie plopped down in the second last row of chairs, and then motioned for Zoe by tapping the desk beside her. She obliged and sat down beside her friend.
"Let's study while we wait!" Millie half-whispered. Zoe shrugged and pulled out her biology textbook and binder. She opened the book gently, as to not disturb the nerd sitting front and centre. Page after page the two poured over, until more and more classmates trickled in to find a seat in the desolate room.Mid page, an alarm went off somewhere, waking Zoe from the zombie-like trance she had entered whilst reading.
"Huh, wha?" Zoe snorted as she jerked her head suddenly and looked around. "Whoops! Just an alarm I set Zo, sorry to scare you!" Millie pulled out her phone and punched a few buttons, and the ringing stopped. Just as soon as the alarm stopped its monotone beeping, the teacher strode into the room. She wore heels, a pencil skirt, and a button down blouse. "Is she a teacher or a stripper?" Millie whispered to Zoe, causing her to laugh quietly.
"Hello class," the teacher began, in a voice that was as shrill and cold as her attire suggested, "I know biology is all of your favourite subjects, but still, I wish you all the best of luck."
She picked up the stack of papers lying on her desk and stared handing them out, going from row to row.Question after question Zoe examined, tried, and to the best of her abilities answered.
Minute after minute ticked by, and after an hour, the small geeky boy in the front left, already finished. Millie and Zoe gave each other knowing glances then went back to finishing their test. By the time they had both finished, five more people had finished and left with smiles on their faces."Ugh that exam was torture!"
Millie blurted out as soon as they left the room.
" I hate exams so much!!! Who the fuck thought that exams were a good idea? Honestly, I want to punch whoever wrote that test."
"Are you done your rant yet?" Zoe asked.
"Mmhmm," Millie nodded.Zoe let out a sigh and retied her sweatpants on her hips. It seemed like everything was out to get her today.
"Hey, cheer up," Millie said, patting Zoe's shoulder gently,"the worst is over, now all we have to worry about is getting tanned and meeting guys!"
"Yeah,"Zoe muttered,"meeting guys..."
Zoe let her mind wander as she said goodbye to her friend and walked towards the front entrance of the school. Meeting guys... Does Millie know nothing about me?, she thought. Guys avoid me like the plague. I'd have a better chance at winning the lottery than getting a boyfriend.
Ever since she was little, Zoe had dreamed about getting married, as most girls do. She imagined herself walking down the aisle on a white silk carpet, with a tunnel of softly glowing lights overhead. Her shimmering dress would fill the aisle with layers of tulle and silk. A diamond tiara would sit atop her perfectly curled hair, and soon, a diamond ring would be slipped on her finger by the handsomest man in the world. When she first imagined her dream wedding, that man had been Zac Efron, but now she didn't know if that fantasy would play out at all. She didn't find anyone in her school especially attractive, and whenever she talked to boys, they seemed to be after one thing only. The thought troubled her enough to shake her back into reality, where she was now beside her car, pulling open the driver's side door. Her body continued its autonomous motion of getting into the car and sticking the key in the ignition. After what seemed like a million failed starts and one almost flood, the beat up old car started and she headed back to her house, away from the stress and pain of school.
