"Wait... What?! I..wha-huh?"
Zoe stammered. Her mind was spinning at a million miles a second, she started to hyperventilate.
"WOAH woah woah, calm down, Zoe. There you go, nice deep breaths."
Lizzie put a slender hand on Zoe's shoulder for comfort, and surprisingly enough, it helped.
"I'm in a coma? But, I'm not. I'm right here, sitting with you, in a hospital. I'm fine. See?"
Zoe waved her arms around and pinched herself a few times. Nothing happened.
"It's a long story, so get comfortable." Lizzie started.
"Okay, are you ready? You're in a coma. I know you don't think you are, but you are. Everything you see, everything you hear, feel, smell or taste right now is the During. There are three different 'realms' I guess you could call them, that exist for humans. There's the Before, that's where we were, you know, living and whatnot? Then there's the During, which is where we are now. The During is a place for people who are in between life and death which you are right now. Then, there's the After. The After is the place where you go when you're completely gone. Dead, kaput, whatever you want to call it."
"So, my body's in the Before, but my, 'spirit' is in the During?"
"There you go!" Lizzie smiled.
Zoe shook her head, all of the information was buzzing around her skull like a swarm of bees. She ran a hand through her hair, which got tangled, yet again.
"Cmon, let's get you settled in. In the During, things pretty much function as normal. Everybody has enough of everything, but we still have jobs, to keep things running. We'll get you a place, first. You're gonna love it here!"
Lizzie squealed and grabbed Zoe by the hand. Zoe was dragged out of the hospital bed, and miraculously, didn't land on her face. She followed Lizzie down the ominous hospital hallway to the exit. The double doors opened to reveal a blindingly sunny day, that made Zoe sneeze.
