CHAPTER THREE
So as it was, that one night we met up was a point marking a tradition in the making. Yep, that means every night an hour after dinner, if no one else was in the dining room, I would go and hang out with Bennett and we'd pretty much talk about everything. How Romeo and Juliet of me. Which beings us back to the fact that we still were being watched since we couldn't become too "buddy buddy."
However, by the middle of the second week on the tenth night of meeting up with him, things surpassed the status of just "buddy buddy." I mean, we both made it incredibly obvious we were into each other but it was never outwardly said or official. Plus there was the factor that I was probably way more head over heels for the guy than he was for me. But anyway, back to that tenth night...
"Hey, dear," he greeted me as I entered through that back entrance that I had claimed as mine. By that point, I felt the whole friggin' dining room was mine. Well, and Bennett's.
"Hey you," I blushed. Yeah, even after ten nights, he still had that affect on me.
"So I was thinking. You know I like you right?" he smirked.
"Well, you mean as more than a friend right?" Obviously he meant as more than a friend.
"Yes," the smirk remained. "And I guess you do too?"
"Obviously," I blurted.
"Well I been thinking maybe I should do something about it, you know, don't you think?"
...Where was he going with this? My pulse raced in my veins and everywhere else inside me where a pulse can race. "I guess..."
"Well..." Suddenly he was standing right in front of me, barely half a foot away. Hello frantic heartbeats. Our eyes locked and I remembered the first day I had seen them. Over the dumpster. How romantic. Holding my stare, he closed the small distance between us and leaned his head to level with mine where our lips almost touched.
He paused for a second which did nothing to calm me down. Finally I couldn't stand the suspense any longer and I reached for the back if his neck and pulled him toward me. The second our lips connected every feeling I had gotten from first making eye contact with him returned about eighty seven times more intense. The world was at a standstill besides for us nestled in the back corner of the kitchen, against the wall behind a rack of empty trays. Nothing could possibly take away from this moment.
"Hello?" Well, except for that. Bennett and I quickly parted and widened our eyes. Who could be in here now? Forget that... WHY now?!
He silently apologized to me and strode toward the front. I eased myself further along the wall into a corner behind a giant metal thing which either could've been an oven or just something that happened to match the tasteful decor of the silver kitchen. If I was seen by anyone, we were both so screwed. But wow that was some kiss!
I heard Bennett's voice and a girl's voice conversing, though it was too muffled for me to make out any words. Honestly, I just wanted to kiss him again. And finally after what seemed like fifteen minutes, he retired to the back of the kitchen whispering my name.
"Bennett, I'm here," I said quietly, standing up from my oh-so-clever hiding place. "Who was that? Did they see anything?" He had an odd look on his face. "Bennett, what's wrong?"
"It was Mrs. Sanders, the head of the camp. She saw nothing but she knows something between us is happening in general. Maybe someone told, I dunno. But she spent time warning me to stay away from you or we're both gone from here."
"Oh. Shit." I wasn't expecting that. "Well what are we gonna do?" I was almost afraid to hear his answer.
He came toward me, pressing me against the wall with his body. "Be more careful, obviously." And with that I asked no more questions and happily let him kiss me again.
***
By the next week- our nineteenth night meeting up (not that I've been keeping close track or anything)- we had both gotten about four warning each to stay away from the other. Every glance in each other's direction was interpreted as something more by anyone who happened to see. Apparently rumors fly fast in a small all-girls camp. Who knew?
But it wasn't as if we cared. Like Bennett had said, all we had to do was be more careful and there wasn't a chance anyone could convict either of us of anything. I mean, they couldn't if there was no proof.
